LAS VEGAS - Among Nevada's barren desert is a town that could be considered Nevada's secret little gem. Located in southeastern Nevada, the quiet town of Caliente, Nevada is the only incorporated community in Lincoln County. Settled in the1860's and coined with the name Caliente in 1901, this small community was built upon the railroad and mining industries in the early days.

This past weekend, one of off road racing's winningest champions of all time, Rob MacCachren, returned to Caliente, Nevada for the annual SNORE Caliente 250 desert race. "The Caliente 250 has long been a favorite race of mine. The mountains, streams and beautiful scenery are second to none for an off road race," commented the Las Vegas off road racing champion.

MacCachren unleashed his wicked desert domination on a full field of 1600 racers as he drove to victory in his third SNORE race in a row, with a winning time of 5:28:09. In fact, MacCachren's overall time was only 11 minutes and 30 seconds off the overall winner of the race who raced a Class 1 Unlimited car.

The Rockstar Energy Racing team owner took possession of his AlumiCraft-built single seat 1600 car just before the start of the 2009 racing season and started from the back of the field in the season opening race, The Battle at Primm. Over the two-day race, MacCachren soared through a stacked field before being crowned the 1600 champ.

At this year's historic MINT 400, MacCachren reigned as the 1600 winner, beating the other 1600 racers and the majority of the entire field finishing 7th OVERALL. With his 80-horsepower AlumiCraft car, the champion desert racer outclassed the bulk of the unlimited trucks and buggies, many that sport over 700 horsepower power plants.

The Caliente 250 was no different, as a slew of 1600 racers all wanted a piece of MacCachren's 1600 race action in hoping to beat him at the game he's nearly perfected. While in the midst of racing multiple off road series among three different racing disciplines, the 44-year old Rockstar Energy Drink athlete overcame his hectic day-to-day racing schedule and silenced the competition with nothing more than pure talent captivating the attention of off road race fans everywhere.

The Rockstar Energy Racing 1600 car was fast all day long as MacCachren weaved a magical web of desert domination through the Caliente, Nevada countryside. Whether he was submarining through the deep streams or blasting up the steep silt-filled mountain trails, his line ultimately was the winning line.

MacCachren is in the midst of beginning his 2009 short course racing season as the 2009 TORC Series opener kicks off on May 15 at Texas Motor Speedway. The race action doesn't stop for the off road racing champion as he races two short course races in May and the following weekend he heads to Mexico's Baja Peninsula for the SCORE Baja 500 where he is slated to race the #3 Rockstar Energy Drink/Riviera Racing Trophy Truck.

Rockstar Energy Racing's Rob MacCachren INVINCIBLE at '09 MINT 400

Las Vegas, Nevada (March 30, 2009) Rockstar Energy Racing's Rob MacCachren defied the majority of the odds in what may be considered one of the most incredible racing wins in the history of the legendary Mint 400. Facing several hundred competitors, all vying for a piece of the latest 2009 edition of the MINT 400, Las Vegas racer, Rob MacCachren, drove his single-seat Alumi Craft 1600 race car to victory among the nation's top 1600 desert racers.

What is so incredible, however, is that the talented MacCachren finished the race in 8th position physically and although the official results have yet to be released, it appears that Rob may have finished 8th overall... all of this in an Alumi Craft limited 1600 race car!

It was a flawless day for the off road racing legend who celebrated his 44th birthday only days before the Mint 400.

MacCachren's solo effort over the roughest terrain ever raced in the United States will go down as one of the Mint 400 classics.

robbapThe early morning start amid some of the most difficult and blinding silt ever experienced by racers, led to a massive pile up of race cars only 4.5 miles off the start. The silt combined with the blinding rising sun tested the ultimate endurance of man and machine. The black 1600 Rockstar Energy Racing single-seat buggy slithered through the carnage and when MacCachren came out of the silt bed unscathed, he was all business.

He never got out of his Mastercraft 3G office chair throughout the nearly 10 hour ordeal and he was in good spirits as he bombed through the desert, passing the competition, all the while communicating with his race team.

"The amount of race vehicles on the course was amazing. After the first lap there were cars and trucks strewn out everywhere. I was surprised by the amount of quality teams sidelined early in the race, but this area north of Las Vegas has not been raced on in over ten years and we expected it to be bad," commented MacCachren at the finish line.

McBeath, MacCachren and Lavie take top drawing spots for legendary Mint 400

Las Vegas, NV- Las Vegas native Bill McBeath will be the first Unlimited Truck off the starting line at the 24th General Tire Mint 400 to be held next weekend at the Moapa Indian Reservation. Starting positions for the historic race were drawn Wednesday night at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino on Fremont Street and announced live on Totally Off Road Radio.

Television color commentator Cameron Steele drew the 2nd position with George Rosenbaum taking 3rd draw in unlimited truck. Pierre Lavie will drive the first Class 1 off the General Tire Mint 400 starting line. Following Lavie will be Rick Romans and Chuck Roderick. Legendary racer and Las Vegas local Rob MacCachren will lead the charge in the 1600 class at the Mint. Behind MacCachren will be Patrick Nirshl and David Schweigart. Vehicles will start single file on race morning.

A total of 240 race vehicles are entered to race the General Tire Mint 400, with more entries expected up to race day. Festivities will kick off with a special FanFest meet & greet/autograph party on Thursday March 26th 2009 on Fremont Street from 6pm-8pm. Fans can get up-close with the race vehicles and meet the drivers. Friday March 27th from 8:30 am-7 pm, the incredible sighs and sounds of the General Tire MINT 400 continue with the famed Tech/Contingency inspection being held the world-renown Fremont Street Experience and Fremont East Entertainment District.

The green flag will drop on Saturday March 28th at 7 am on the Moapa Indian Reservation Travel Plaza 25 minutes north of downtown Las Vegas.

robbap Primm, Nevada (February 16, 2009) Desert racing veteran, Rob MacCachren, kicked off the 2009 1600 racing season with a strong victory after outperforming a huge field of nearly 50 1600 racers in SNORE's season opener, Battle at Primm.

Many of the nation's top 1600 racers converged for the two-day shootout, which continues to grow each year. It is considered as the race 1600 racers do not want to miss.

Battling over 92 miles each day, racers blasted around the difficult 18-mile course for five laps. Set adjacent to some of the most famous landmarks in Southern Nevada, the Primm Valley Casinos, which divide Nevada and California, thousands of fans and racers gathered together to watch the nation's best 1600 racers go head-to-head.

MacCachren debuted his brand new ALUMI CRAFT single-seat 1600 car on Friday afternoon at the Battle at Primm Contingency event amid the cold and wet weather. Parked in the FOX RACING SHOX booth, hundreds of onlookers stopped to view the satin black ROCKSTAR Energy Drink branded 1600 car.

"The new car built by ALUMI CRAFT is great. Sleek, simple and fast. We're looking forward to racing the new car in as many races as possible this season," said a smiling Rob MacCachren.

robbapMacCachren began Saturday's race in the second to last row after SNORE officials made a mistake, which they later apologized for. This forced the savvy desert racing veteran to pass through the majority of the field in order to begin up front in Sunday's final race.

"I'm not sure he ever lifted from the start line," said crew chief Ian Beaman referring to Saturday's race.

"After the third lap, he was mid-pack having passed 20 + cars and then after the fourth lap, he cut that in half. By the final lap, Rob was pushing towards the front of the pack and apparently the car ran pretty good."

Official results released by SNORE timing officials showed the nation's top 1600 racer, Rob MacCachren, had finished Saturday's race in first place, 11 seconds faster than the car that left the line first.

Sunday morning saw near perfect race conditions, as Rob MacCachren rolled out his BFGoodrich Tires shod racecar. The #1603 FAT Performance powered single-seat car lined up on the front row beside Curt Geer, in what turned out to be the best match of the two-day race.

robbap"Neither one of us lifted and we went off the dike jump side-by-side. I looked over and saw him pushing hard and I just ran this car as fast as it would go. FOX Racing Shox has worked closely with me in testing and I knew the car could take anything we punished it with. In the end, it did. The course turned pretty rough in the last few laps, with big ruts in the turns, but the new car is fast. Every time I thought I was making time and starting to pull away, I saw Geer closing in on me. There are a lot of really fast 1600 racers out here and it was a great race, I'm glad we came out on top today," commented Rob.

MacCachren led after the first jump and he never looked back. Each lap he pulled slightly pulled away from the field crossing the finish line for his first 1600 victory of the year.

MacCachren will next race his 1600 car at the SCORE San Felipe 250 after racing the Riviera Racing #3 Trophy Truck in the morning and switching to the 1600 car in the afternoon. Two weeks later, on March 28, 2009, Rob MacCachren will race the historic MINT 400 held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The General Tire Mint 400 off-road race, which returned after a 21-year hiatus last year, will be back bigger and better than ever complete with Tech/Contingency Inspection Friday, March 27 utilizing the Fremont Street Experience in its entirety from Main Street to Eighth Street, as well as the Fremont East Entertainment District, after being held only on Fremont East in 2008.

Presented by the Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts (SNORE), Tech/Contingency Inspection of vehicles entered in the event will line up from Main Street to Eighth Street under the world-renowned Fremont Street Experience Canopy, according to SNORE Contingency Director Jamie Fagan. The expansion of Tech/Contingency Inspection will now include the entire length of the Fremont Street Experience canopy, which has been heralded world-wide for its colorful presentations, as well as will cross over Las Vegas Boulevard and include the Fremont Street Entertainment District. “This is an incredible opportunity for the City of Las Vegas, the people of Las Vegas and businesses located in the downtown corridor, as this is an event that has been recognized throughout the world in years past. I am very proud to be working with the City of Las Vegas government and municipalities, our Mayor and the properties located along the Fremont Street corridor in getting this event off the ground and to be a part of history once again in the making. I can’t thank everyone enough for their unyielding support and trust throughout this incredible journey and history lesson,” said Ms. Fagan.

Additionally, the world’s oldest off-road race will be run Saturday, March 28 northeast of Las Vegas on the grounds of the old Mint 400 with the start/finish line located in the vicinity of the Fireworks stand/plaza on the Moapa Indian Reservation about 8 miles west of Glendale, NV, near State Route 168 and I-15.

“Tech Inspection is back where it belongs,” said K.J. Howe, who was the event’s Race Director beginning in 1973. “In its heyday, the Mint 400 Tech Inspection was so popular that kids were even cutting school to gather on Fremont Street and I think the latest development will generate the same enthusiasm again.”

SNORE President Don Wall joined Howe in lauding the expansion of Tech/Contingency Inspection on Fremont Street, “In its heyday, we would have as many as 500 cars lined up on Fremont Street for the Mint 400,” said Wall, “It was almost like a county fair with off-road cars and it drew thousands of people every year. We should see the same thing happening again with the expansion of Tech Inspection to include all of Fremont Street.”

Last year’s event signaled the return of the Mint 400, which had last been staged in 1988. Run on one of the original courses south of Las Vegas in an area near Primm in 2008, last year’s event was won by Trophy Truck drivers Brian Collins of Las Vegas and Chuck Hovey of Oceanside, California.

SNORE will open its 2009 season with the Battle of Primm Feb. 13-15, with a record entry to date of 277 cars with 3 weeks until race day.

Following the General Tire Mint 400, the remainder of the 2009 schedule will include the Dusty Times Caliente 250 May 8-10; the KC HiLiITES Midnight Special July 25; the South Point SNORE 250 Oct. 2-4 and the Kartek Western Challenge Dec. 12.

Tinley Park, IL- General Tire and Lucas Oil has announced NeWave Television Productions as the production company for the Mint 400 on SPEED and VERSUS. The SPEED shows will be aired in High Definition within the Lucas Oil… On the Edge show airing in 4th quarter 2008. The hour long VERSUS show will air within the Lucas Oil Motorsports Hour and air on April 26th, 2008.


In 1968, Norm Johnson had an idea. As public relations director for the Mint Hotel in Las Vegas, he created the first “Del Webb Mint 400 Desert Rally." Over the next two decades, the Southern Nevada race would become one of the top off-road races in the World. Then, in 1988…. the Mint 400 disappeared.

SNORE (Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts) is proud to announce the return of the historic Mint 400 Off-Road Race! SNORE is the oldest off-road racing sanctioning body in the history of the United States and has been in existence in Nevada for 38 years. SNORE is a non-profit, completely volunteer only run organization. We have secured the trademark, copyright and registration rights to The Mint 400 name to preserve its history and with that, we have decided to host this epic event once again in the Southern Nevada desert!

2003 Champ Car Champion Paul Tracy will team up with Ed “Clyde” Stout in the QAE Corp Stout ST1 #13 Trophy Truck at the Battle of Primm, February 15-17th in Primm, NV. Tracy, who is ranked 1st among active CART drivers with 31 victories to date, is excited about taking an off-road adventure in the Stout ST1. You can post your own Mint 400 photos by registering with the gallery. It will be approved by an administrator before being uploaded to the site.
Visitors can add comments or rate photos.
