IRL AND CHAMP CAR AGREE TO MERGER

UNITED: Late last week officials from the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series reached an agreement to merge the Champ Car Series into the IRL effective immediately. It will be a difficult transition, with Champ Car teams making the change to IRL cars in time for the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway. A press conference to discuss the many details of the arrangement is scheduled during testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway later this week. The deal marks the end of a 13-year split which divided open-wheel racing and its fans.

NAMING RIGHTS: Auto Club of Southern California has purchased the naming rights to California Speedway, with the two-mile superspeedway now known as Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

MONDAY MOVES: Carl Edwards won the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and Tony Stewart claimed the Nationwide Series event as both races were held Monday at Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

NEW TV: After many years on Speed, the Hooters Pro Cup Series will see all of its events televised on Versus this year.

AWARD WINNER: 14-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force was selected as this year’s winner of the annual Justice Brothers-Shav Glick Award.

FOR SALE: The cars and other assets of the International Race of Champions are scheduled to be sold March 7–8 in an auction at IROC headquarters in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.

SIGNED: Ryan Hunter-Reay will drive the Team Ethanol Indy car for Rahal Letterman Racing in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series. Hunter-Reay ran a partial season for the team last year.

POWER RANKINGS: Donny Schatz clung to his lead in the National Speed Sport News Power Rankings.

Post/MacCachren looking to repeat as pre-running starts Saturday for 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Round 2, SCORE Desert Series
Post/MacCachren looking to repeat as pre-running starts
Saturday for 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Over 250 cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs from 20 States, six countries expected in March 15 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—As pre-running starts Saturday for next month’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, veteran desert racers Mark Post and Rob MacCachren are finalizing plans to repeat as overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck winners of the popular spring race. With nine class wins between them in this event, Post, Laguna Beach, Calif. and MacCachren, Las Vegas, are the defending SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall season point champions in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150.
Round 2 of the 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 15 in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
With over 250 entries from 20 states and six countries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2008.
“I just recently returned from finalizing the race course for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, and I'm pleased to report that we have 232 miles of what the sunny side of Baja is all about…moguls, more moguls, sand, silt, canyons, washes, rocks, and a few graded roads,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after it started in 1973.
“After the start, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. San Felipe’s new delegate, Hazael Sierra Castillo, is blading the area approaching the Zoo Road Crossing, which will make it a safer approach than in the past. The area will be fenced and patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action. I really believe racers are really going to enjoy this course. It has everything that makes SCORE desert racing in Baja so challenging and memorable.”
This will be the first time that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash at the start of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja washes—Azufre and Huatomote before heading back Northwest for the final 19.6 miles to the finish line.
"Desert racing is like nothing else in life,” said Post, 50, a top Southern California entrepreneur.
“Sometimes you face incredibly difficult challenges that test you both physically and mentally and put you on the edge…there is nothing better. Heading to San Felipe with the opportunity to put the No. 1 SCORE Trophy-Truck in victory circle is always exciting. Of course, this is one of my favorite races of all time and we’ve been very good here in the past. SCORE racing in Baja is something very special to Riviera Racing and this year I am very proud to introduce the third generation of Riviera Racing drivers. My son, Max (Post, 17), will debut his Riviera Racing Protruck and we are excited to turn him loose.”
Arizona veteran desert racer Pete Sohren and Southern California’s rising star Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions. Sohren races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars is defending season point champion Billy Gasper, Chino Hills, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be defending SCORE Overall ATV and Class 25 point Champion Danny Prather, Ramona, Calif.
Sohren, 43, of Glendale, Ariz., is a veteran SCORE desert racer who has won Class 5 (unlimited VW Baja Bugs) twice in this race (1997 and 2001). He now drives the No. 2 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck, finishing eighth in season points last year after a solid fourth-place finish in the 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
With 20 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Sohren will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.
Bell, 22, of Sun City, Calif., who has won the overall and Class 22 title in this race the past two years will team with legendary SCORE Baja racer Johnny Campbell, 37, San Clemente, Calif., riding the No. 1x Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X.
To date, Class 1-2/600 has the most entries with 25 followed by SCORE Trophy-Truck with 20, Class 1 with 19, SCORE Lite with 15 and Class 5/1600 with 10. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 50 additional late entries are still expected.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, Class 22 (open) has 12 entries and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over) has eight. Leading the Pro ATV entries so far is Class 25 (open) with 12.
Gasper, 40, who won last season’s SCORE Class 1 season point championship with his brother Dave, will drive the No. 100 Chevy-powered Porter open-wheel desert race car in Class 1.
Helping Prather, 27, lead the ATV entries off the line in a Honda TRX450R will be riding mates Mike Cafro, 37, Bonsall, Calif., Levi Marana, 22, Hemet, Calif., and Chad Prull, 32, Laveen, Ariz.
Besides Sohren and Post/MacCachren, the SCORE Trophy-Truck field also includes 2006 overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., in the No. 38 GNR Racing Ford F-150.
Post also won the overall in this race two times with veteran Jerry Whelchel, Portola Hills, Calif. as his second driver (1998 in Class 1 and 2004 in SCORE Trophy-Truck) while MacCachren, 42, with six class wins in San Felipe, also won the overall in this race in 2003 as the second driver for Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico.
Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico, now races as the second driver for his son Gus Vildosola Jr. Considered the top Mexican team in the SCORE Desert Series, the Vildosolas drive the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.
Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 14).
At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 16), the awards celebration will be held in the Plaza on the Malecon.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards.

David Coulthard Pulls Out Of Formula 1 Testing

David Coulthard Pulls Out Of Formula 1 Testing

Feb 27 2008

INJURY forced David Coulthard to pull out of a crucial Formula One testing session in Barcelona yesterday.

The Scot hurt his neck during the first day of the final pre-season testing programme at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The Red Bull Racing driver had treatment last night and it is hoped he will be back behind the wheel today.

With Red Bull running two cars this week, sister team Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel stood in for Coulthard yesterday afternoon.

The latter only have one of their new cars on track.

Dario Franchitti climbed the NASCAR Nationwide Standings to 19th after finishing 24th in the twice-postponed Stater 300 race.

BASKETBALL: Maurice Hampton is desperate for Scottish Rocks team-mate Gareth Murray to return from a sprained ankle before the Braehead outfit lose any more ground in the race to make the BBL play-offs.

Murray missed last Sunday's defeat to Guildford and is a doubt for Saturday's trip to Worcester. Hampton said: "Gareth is a key player for us and the sooner he comes back, the better."

CRICKET: Corstorphine kid Paddy Saddler last night pledged his future to Scotland after being picked for a place on a prestigious trip to India next month.

The 16-year-old was born in London but moved to Edinburgh 10 years ago. He is the only Scots-based player selected to play for an MCC Schools side at the first Spirit of Cricket Festival in Chandigarh next month.

Saddler was nominated by national youth boss Craig Wright who wants him in the Scotland Under-17 team that will compete in the County Championship for the first time next season.

Saddler will face schools sides from India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

CYCLING: Chris Hoy will be up against old rival Arnaud Tournant when he defends his Keirin title at next month's World Championships in Manchester. The Edinburgh rider is bidding to extend a 24-race winning streak.

TENNIS: Top seed Jamie Baker faces Italian Marco Crugnola in the first round of the Harlingen Futures event in Texas today.

SQUASH: Scotland's John White reached the second round of the Virginia Pro Championship in Richmond when he beat Australian qualifier Wade Johnstone 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7.

TABLE TENNIS: Scotland lost 3-2 to Algeria in their last-but-one group match at the World Team Championships in China.

BERLIN — Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher insists this season’s Formula One campaign will once again be dominated by either his old team Ferrari or fierce rivals McClaren.

Schumacher, 39, was test driving for his former stable Ferrari in Barcelona this week, ahead of the new season which starts in Australia on March 16, and was beaten by McClaren’s Lewis Hamilton.

“There are two teams, which will fight for the world championship. Us and the silver arrows (McClaren),” said the German.

Britain’s 2007 Formula One title runner-up Lewis Hamilton was fastest in testing on Monday at the Catalunya circuit as the 22-year-old stormed round in the fastest time of 1 minute 22.276 seconds in his McLaren.

Reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest (1:22.319) in a Ferrari and the retired Schumacher was third fastest (1:22.428).

“We know now, where we stand now,” said Schumacher.

“And we know how the silver arrows are doing as well."

ImageFormula 1 circuit in Barcelona ramps up anti-racism measures : -

The operators of Barcelona's formula one circuit on Monday admitted that security has been tightened since the racism scandal erupted three weeks ago.

Lewis Hamilton seemed unperturbed as he drove to the top of the time sheets, but a Circuit de Catalunya spokesman revealed that much effort has been put into ensuring that the bigotry of some Spanish supporters is never again seen.

"We have made some changes," he told Britain's Guardian newspaper, after the FIA warned that a repeat of the incidents could cost Spain its two grands prix.

The spokesman said fans' banners and clothes are being checked this week, while the grandstand opposite the McLaren garage and the roof above the team's pit area is closed, and access in the paddock has been reduced by the erection of barriers.

"We want McLaren and Hamilton to be comfortable," he insisted.

Germany's Bild newspaper revealed that extra security people are on duty in the paddock.

"It is a purely precautionary measure," the spokesman said.

Wings for Life

SANTA MONICA, CA--(Marketwire - February 26, 2008) - Over 45 one-of-a-kind items will go on sale on eBay's Wings for Life Charity Auction this March 13-30. With just a click of the mouse, buyers get the chance to own David Coulthard's actual Formula 1 race car, Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White's 2008 X-Games helmet, Motor Sport Legend Travis Pastrana's signed jersey and skateboard star Ryan Sheckler's signed board. Even aviation enthusiasts can get their fill with a Red Bull Air Race World Series weekend package for two including a 2-seater flight with the Series' current world champion, American Mike Mangold. All proceeds will benefit the Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation -- and all bids start at just 2 dollars!

Athletes from around the world have donated memorabilia and trophies that can not be purchased anywhere but in this auction. Contributors include such international superstars as Cyril Despres' Dakar-winning 2007 KTM bike, MotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden's racing helmet, B.A.S.E. jumper Felix Baumgartner's jump suit and World Champion surfer Sofia Mulanovich's surfboard. All of the items are original, signed and open to public bidding.

A SALE TO SAVE LIVES

Wings for Life co-founder and two-time motocross World Champion, Heinz Kinigadner, has a very personal connection to this auction. He started the Wings for Life foundation for his 23-year-old son, Hannes, who became a paraplegic after suffering a severe motocross injury in 2003. Kinigadner's brother Hans, also a motocross athlete, has likewise been bound to a wheelchair since 1984. Wings for Life began as a collaborative effort between Kinigadner and Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2004, although its aim has never been solely to aid extreme sports athletes. Since more than 90% of all spinal cord injuries occur while people are doing everyday tasks such as riding in a car, hiking or working on a roof, the founders know that no one is immune to the grief and pain that paralysis brings.

The foundation's goals are four-fold: (1) fund cutting-edge scientific research aimed to heal spinal cord injury; (2) improve scientific communication in this specific field of research; (3) develop concrete, clinical intervention strategies; and (4) prevent spinal cord injuries from ever happening.

REV UP THAT MOUSE

The charity auction to benefit Wings for Life starts on March 13 and runs through March 30. All items are on sale to the public and bidding begin at 2 dollars -- even on the Formula 1 race car! To place your bid during these dates, visit www.wingsforlife.com/ebay.

SCORE International inks International Racing Consultants Agreement starting at 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Led by veteran racer Steve Myers, IRC tracking devices
To be mandatory for all vehicles in SCORE Desert Series

LOS ANGELES—SCORE International, motorsports producers and sanctioning body for the world-renown SCORE Desert Series, have announced an exclusive agreement with International Racing Consultants to provide the special vehicle tracking devices used at the SCORE races in the U.S. and Mexico.
Starting with next month’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race in Baja California, Mexico, IRC equipment will be mandatory for the entire field of cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs. Used primarily to monitor race progress while tracking the route and speed of each vehicle in the race, IRC also provides a website (www.racetheworld.net) where teams and the general public will be able to view the location of vehicles with updates at two-minute intervals throughout the entire time limit of each race.
“The time is right for SCORE and IRC to link up in this official capacity which will add an exciting new element to the SCORE Desert Series,” said Sal Fish, President/CEO of the Los Angeles-based SCORE International, which has started its 35th season. “The technology available to enhance the overall execution of our races is unbelievable and IRC is certainly on the cutting edge of all the advancements that continue to be made in these very important areas for our sport. Another very attractive thing to SCORE when finalizing this agreement is the fact that IRC President Steve Myers is a desert racer who clearly understands both the racing and technology sides of our sport.”
Based in Tustin, Calif., IRC is in its fourth year of providing equipment and technological support for these special areas not only in the desert, but also in water and air sports as well.
IRC is a specialist in advanced satellite communications in land, air and sea sports as well as commercial and personal logistics with a team of very experienced professionals.
SCORE car, truck and ATV classes will be required to have the IriTrack unit while motorcycles will need to have the smaller e-Track unit mounted on their vehicles.
“IRC is very excited about its new partnership with SCORE International, which is one of the world’s foremost desert racing organizations,” said Steve Myers, IRC President who is a second-generation desert racer who was the 2004 SCORE Class 10 season point champion. “We began our initial discussions with SCORE when we started nearly four years ago and have had a strong presence at SCORE races since then with many racers leasing our system on an optional basis. As a matter of fact, in last year’s massive 40th anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, nearly 45 percent of the 424 starters were equipped with IRC technology devices.”
“IRC is committed to technology development and we look forward to working with SCORE and exploring the unlimited potential of what our system and our software technologies have to offer.”
Myers said he first tested the IriTrack system when competing in the Dakar Rally in Europe and Africa in January of 2005.
“We were one of about 150 teams that ran out of fuel during one stage and were stranded off course for about 18 hours,” Myers remembered. “The IriTrack Control Center started talking to us and told us that they knew where we were and that help was on the way. That episode made my commitment to use IriTrack even greater and finished the stage for founding IRC.”
