Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Thunders Into Arizona

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing
Thunders Into Arizona!
Corona, Ca. (April 30, 2009) - The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) rolls into the Valley of the Sun as short course off road racing comes to Speedworld for rounds 3 and 4 in Surprise, Arizona on May 2nd and 3rd. Arizona will be playing host to the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series for the first time with the long awaited arrival of high impact, high energy short course off road racing. The popular off road racing series is sure to make an immediate impact with the raucous roar of 850HP Unlimited Trucks combined with the wail of Light Trucks and high strung buggies. The anticipated Speedworld event is sure to draw a significant crowd from an off road savvy fan base that has been clamoring for an area event since the emergence of short course off road racing in the West.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing's Tony Vanillo had his sights set on a Phoenix area race as the series was developing. "This is incredible to be bringing big time short course off road racing here to Surprise," said Vanillo. "There are so many of our drivers, teams and fans that support the sport who are from this area. With the hard work of Speedworlds' Dan Matthews, we have been able to put this event together and make it happen. This is going to be a first class event."

Unlimited 4 (4wheel drive 850HP Truck) driver Jerry Daugherty, coming off a giant win in round 2 in Primm is now focused on backing up his performance with a strong showing. Alan Pflueger, with two rounds of U-4 competition under his belt is now expected to run with Daugherty and U-4 stars Carl Renezeder, Travis Coyne and Ken Brascho.

Currently, experience is prevailing in Unlimited 2 (2wheel drive 850HP) as Carl Renezeder is the class of the field while veteran Jerry Whelchel and Motocross Champion Jeff Ward sit in second and third. Challenging them will be the young guns of U-2, Bryce Menzies, Rodrigo Ampudia and series newcomer "Ballistic" BJ Baldwin, who will be fighting for a podium spot in what is sure to be a good old fashioned Arizona shoot-out.

The Unlimited Lite (Light Truck 300HP) story of Primm was short course champion Rob Naughton. While not quite driving with one hand tied behind his back, Naughton came close while taking rounds 1 and 2 with a broken driving foot. Now the question remains if Brian Deegan, Chris Brandt and the rest of the U-Lite field are ready to challenge Naughton for the title. The Bully Dog SuperLite class will also be featured as the new spec truck class continues to build a quality field.

The full weekend of racing will include a significant Limited and Unlimited Buggy field featuring Unlimited buggy driver Chuck Cheek who swept rounds 1 and 2 in Primm. Surprise will also be the location for the return of UTVs to short course racing as the chase for the Dragonfire Racing World Cup begins while the always competitive Karts will continue to provide excitement.

Won't be able to make it to Surprise this weekend? Be sure to watch all the excitement from rounds 1 and 2 in Primm, Nevada this Saturday as the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series makes it's televised debut on SPEED at 1 and 2 PM Eastern time/10 &11 Pacific.

If you're in the Phoenix area, please be sure to join us at Buffalo Wild Wings in Surprise for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series fan appreciation party and meet and greet. 13882 W Bell Rd Surprise, AZ 85374 (corner of Litchfield Road) Friday May 01, 2009 7-10PM. McMillin Racing's New Era Unveiled in the Desert

April 29, 2009

It was bound to happen, as history is known to repeat itself. A new generation begins to shape a new era of McMillin Racing. Over twenty years ago, Mark and Scott McMillin, created the current era from the original McMillin Racing patriarch, Corky McMillin. Since the late 1970's, the two McMillin brothers have demonstrated their innumerable amounts of strength and stamina in their quest to conquer the elements of the world's toughest deserts while winning races and championships.

This past Saturday, April 25, the torch was passed from Mark McMillin to his son Daniel, as the 21-year old San Diego resident strapped into his father's JIMCO Class 1 racecar for the 186-mile MDR"The King of the Desert" race.

Of course, desert racing is nothing new for either of Mark's sons, Daniel 21 or Luke 16, as they have lived desert racing since birth. However, until this point in their love affair with the North American deserts, neither has raced in the unlimited high-speed open wheel car classes. Daniel has proven his desert prowess with success in the 1/2 1600 cars over the years, while his younger brother Luke continues to advance in experience each and every race.

The MDR"King of the Desert" results speak for themselves, as Daniel McMillin piloted the Unlimited JIMCO Class 1 racecar to second overall. Starting from the fifth position, Daniel, quickly moved through the field in the first 31 miles. Both he and his co-driver, Cameron Parrish, preran the racecourse for two days prior, working together in unison while adapting to the new world of Class 1.

"Daniel was first on the road and the first car through Main Pits as he started the second lap. He's had some time behind the wheel of my car during testing and prerunning, but this was the first opportunity behind the wheel of the fast JIMCO during a race," said a grinning Mark McMillin.

The 21-year-old McMillin racer produced stellar results early during the first 100-miles, only being passed by the eventual overall winner, Shawn McCallum, en route to a solid second-place finish.

"We had a great race. The car was perfect and we didn't have a single flat tire all day long. You have to love those BFGoodrich Tires, they are simply magic. We had a car capable of winning today and we led early, but McCallum got around us and he knows this desert as good as anyone out here. We charged hard during the last couple laps and the lap times look good, but we weren't making up enough time on Shawn. We'll get better as time goes on, as we get a little better acquainted with this JIMCO Class 1. The race team performed phenomenal in the pits and I'm going away from this first Class 1 race with a notebook full of notes," commented the beaming Daniel McMillin.

"Execution and consistency is the key towards winning and cultivating championships. The team had a great performance today and ran well and they're plenty fast enough to win races, but this is going to take some time and experience for this new Class 1 McMillin Racing team. The dimension that we have on this team is that Luke isn't that many years off before he moves into a faster car," said Mark as he walked off across the desert grinning.

16-year old, Luke McMillin, kicked off the windy Saturday morning prepared to wreak havoc in his McMillin Homes 1600 car as he's done seven other times. With Chris Cortez navigating from the right seat, the youngest racing McMillin began his eighth race among a field of ten starters battling the barren desert. This particular patch of desolate desert scape is located near the Imperial Valley, which has long been considered the Mecca of off road activities. Luke and his brother Daniel are no strangers to this desert as they have been trekking here since they could walk.

By days end, Luke battled against man and machine for an impressive second place finish, his best day yet in his young racing career. "It was nearly a perfect day of racing. We didn't have any problems all day and we just missed out on the win. The car was great today and the Major Racing Engine pulled hard all day long. Same as my brother, I didn't have a flat tire all day long," said the youngest McMillin.

Off road racing is more than simply a passion of life. It's an adventure that has been embedded in the McMillin family tradition for over three decades. Daniel McMillin's first Class 1 race may begin to shape the new era of McMillin Racing, but the consistent and legendary heritage from the past generations shines brilliantly when the going gets tough. McMillin's just never give up.

Mark, and his son, Daniel, return to the desert on June 13th for the MDR "Coyote Wash 200" where the father/son duo will share driving duties in the McMillin Racing Class 1 JIMCO for the summer night race, while Luke McMillin campaigns his 1600 car.

America's legendary off road racing family will race in the BITD Vegas to Reno 3-day rally style event on August 19-23, 2009. This race will cover over 1000-miles throughout the Nevada desert as an international contingent of desert racers descend upon the United States for this challenging experience.

Mark McMillin will debut his 2009 Geiser-built Trophy Truck in the 2009 BITD Vegas to Reno race. Scott McMillin and his son, Andy, will race their #31 McMillin Homes race truck in the BITD Vegas to Reno as well.

Daniel and Luke McMillin will share the 1000-plus miles of desert racing experience together in the McMillin Homes 1600 car.

About McMillin Racing
With over three decades of racing experience, the McMillin family represents three generations of accomplished championship racers. Founded by the late off-road racing legend Corky McMillin, McMillin Racing continues to be respected as a one of the most successful desert racing teams of all time. They are supported by a long list of dedicated family, friends and employees of McMillin Companies, all who make up an incredibly talented group of steadfast supporters. Since 1976, they have raced at the highest level of competition in the deserts of North America. Together as a family, they have multiple series championships, along with significant race victories in both the United States and Baja California.

McMillin Racing symbolizes the ultimate passion in off road racing.

Fwd: NEWS: Thompson Wins Jetta TDI Cup Round 2 at VIR

JAKE THOMPSON WINS VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI CUP ROUND #2 AT VIR
--
Series to return to action May 15-17 at Miller Motorsports Park

ALTON, VA (April 26, 2009) – Heading into the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season, eight drivers had previous experience in the series. However, for the second time this weekend, a series rookie took the checkered flag with Vancouver, Canada’s Jake Thompson coming out on top today in the #19 ViON car at VIRginia International Raceway.

Thompson, the 2004 Canadian National Karting Champion, took the lead on lap three from pole sitter Timmy Megenbier who retired on the last lap with mechanical issues. For the last half of the race, Thompson battled bumper to bumper with Mark Pombo, but never relinquished the lead. Pombo placed second and Taylor Broekemeier finished third. For Thompson, the win was redemption for Saturday’s race, which he led at one point.

“Yesterday, when I found myself in the lead, I was nervous and made a mistake, so that experience definitely helped me learn to handle myself a little better under pressure. Pombo was all over me for the last half of the race, but I was able to keep my composure and hold him off,” said Thompson. “I’ve competed in karting for many years, but this is my first experience in cars, so to get a win in only my second race of the season is fantastic. I’m really glad that I landed in the Jetta TDI Cup because the emphasis that the series puts on driver development will hopefully help me to continue to grow in my racing career.”

Guest drivers, journalist, Dan Carney and Halifax, Virginia’s Jeb Burton finished 21st and 23rd respectively. Burton was involved in an on-track incident with the #22 car, which sent him off-course and to the rear of the field. Despite being frustrated with his result, Burton was positive about his experience.

“Being able to participate in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series this weekend was a lot of fun for me. I’ve not done a lot of road-course racing in the past, so it was great to be able to get a little bit of experience,” Burton said. “Obviously, I’m frustrated, but I think that with a little more seat time in these cars and on road courses, I could be competitive. Hopefully, I’ll be able to give it another shot down the road.”

After two rounds of the Jetta TDI Cup, the championship standings have the winner of yesterday’s race at VIR, Joey Atterbury and Jake Thompson tied for the lead with 43 points. AJ Nealey (41), Pombo (40) and Taylor Broekemeier (37) round out the top five.

“The inaugural race weekend of the Jetta TDI Cup absolutely proved our concept that Volkswagen clean diesel technology, young drivers and a top-level crew produces some of the best racing available anywhere in North America,” said Clark Campbell, motorsport manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “If the talent level displayed this weekend at VIR is any indication as to how the rest of the season is going to go, it’s going to be a very exciting sophomore season.”

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series returns to action May 15-17 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
