Angry Bourdais vows legal action - and to stay in F1
Sébastien Bourdais has revealed his shock, disappointment and frustration in Scuderia Toro Rosso for having released him midway through the 2009 F1 World Championship campaign – threatening to initiate legal action against the Red Bull 'junior' concern for what he believes to be a breach of contract and vowing to remain firmly committed to a future in the top flight.

It was confirmed by the team earlier today that the record-breaking former multiple Champ Car king will no longer be in the cockpit of the #11 machine come the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest in just over a week's time – when a raft of updates will be introduced to the unloved and hitherto underperforming STR4, designed to vault it some way up the starting grid.

Bourdais has struggled to get to grips with the car over the first half of the season, leaving him to be shown up by young rookie team-mate and namesake Sébastien Buemi. A similar upgrade last year helped to transform the Frenchman from a tail-ender into a regular points challenger – and he contends that not granting him the chance to prove his mettle with the new evolution this time around is cruel indeed.

“I am very disappointed and shocked by the decision taken by Scuderia Toro Rosso of not allowing me to drive for the team until the end of the current season,” the 30-year-old said in an official statement. “I consider that, in doing so, Scuderia Toro Rosso has breached its contractual duties towards me; also I believe that nothing in my behaviour would legitimate a decision of the team to terminate the contract.

Bourdais joined Toro Roso in 2008, after clinching a historic fourth title in the American Champ Car series. In his first season in Formula One the Frenchman struggled scoring just four points, and was overshadowed by team mate Sebastian Vettel.

At the halfway point of 2009 season Bourdais has failed to qualify higher than 14th and scored just two points from his eighth-place finishes at the Australian and the Monaco Grand Prix.

LONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso have told Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais he cannot take his place at the Formula One team for granted beyond the end of the season.
Bourdais, France's only current grand prix driver, joined the Red Bull-backed team this year after winning four ChampCar titles in a row in the U.S.
However he has been overshadowed by team mate Sebastian Vettel, who is leaving at the end of the year for the main Red Bull team. The 21-year-old German has scored nine points from 12 races to two for Bourdais.
"In Formula One you have to give someone half a year of time before you start to judge him," team co-owner Gerhard Berger told the official Formula One website (www.formula1.com).
"The half year is over and he (Bourdais) is now in a situation where he has to prove his talents.
"I would not say I already have a clear opinion on him but I also have to say Sebastian Vettel started a couple of races before and he performed very well in the first half year," added the Austrian.
Asked whether Bourdais was a fixture at Toro Rosso next season, Berger added: "No, it's open".
Berger said the team's young driver programme would be looked at first in the search for a replacement for Vettel and Red Bull would have the final say on the 2009 lineup.
"Everyone will bring opinions and then we, Didi (Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz) and myself, will try to find the right way for the team," he said.
"At the end of the day the last word will come from Red Bull because that is where we get all our resources from. So it is natural we listen to what he would like to do."
