A high-ranking municipal official has been assassinated in the Mexican town of Tecate, less than a day after a drug-smuggling tunnel was discovered just across the border in Tecate, Ca., along wit some 15,000 pounds of marijuana.

According to wire and Mexican press reports attributed to Baja California state justice officials, a group of heavily heavily armed gunmen broke into the home of Juan José Soriano Pereira about 2 a.m. today and shot him to death in front of his family. His wife and children escaped injury.

Investigators found 45 shell casings of .223-caliber and 7.62-millimeter at the scene.

The Tijuana daily Frontera identified Soriano as an interim sub-director of the Tecate municipal police department, a position he had held only since Saturday, when the new city administration took office.

He was 35.
