Assassins invade V-Town for SCORE Terribles Cup July 19-21
“We have taken the checkers in classes 10, SCORE Lite and 1600 and are planning on doing it again” said Desert Assassins driver Cameron Steele about this months SCORE series pilgrimage to Las Vegas July 19-21. Temperatures of 115 degrees and a newly designed competition circuit are expected to welcome racers to the 3rd annual SCORE Terribles Cup where the ‘DA’ will do battle in four of the six classes taking to the dirt of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway World of Outlaws oval.
Steele’s teammate Darren Hardesty was runner up for Dirt Sports driver of the year and he is coming into Vegas with a vengeance “Last year we swept all the races in class 10 and then on the last lap of the last race I was given a NASCAR turn around and finished second!” Darren continued “This year we are looking for a clean sweep”
The team has a history of winning in “short course” settings as Steele, who is a TV personality on the Champ Car World Series and the ESPN X Games, has won as far back as the 1986 and ‘87 SCORE Off Road World Championships held at Riverside International Raceway. Cameron has also raced motorcycles in stadium settings both in AMA Supercross and the Mickey Thompson Stadium Series so the tight confines are not unusual to him. Winning in Vegas is also not new to Steele who has 3 class wins at the legendary Mint 400 in Baja Bugs and Mid Size trucks.
Cameron comes into the event leading the championship charge for SCORE Lite in his car affectionately known as ‘Pinkie’. The ‘Pink Masher’ is neon pink, and won every race in the class here in 2006. Cameron is contesting the entire SCORE season with legacy driver Kash Vessels who has been hurting feelings when behind the wheel for the team.
Darren just recently raced his 165hp VW powered limited buggy against 53 “unlimited” 500+hp cars and finished 4th in the 39th annual Baja 500. “After winning all but one points race in 2007 and taking the championship I think people are starting to understand how gnarly Darren is and this last Baja 500 was the exclamation point to that” said Steele.
The team will also field the 800hp #16 Unbound Energy Drink SCORE Trophy Truck as well where Cameron has finished in the top 5 before. “We have led all but one lap of a main, been run into the wall, have smashed into the K rail, flipped over, had my seat belts pop off….all that is left to do in Trophy Truck is win” Steele quipped. In the past Steele has raced a smaller Trophy Truck that was converted from the ‘Pro-Truck’ class and had a considerably smaller engine than most of his fellow competitors. This year Steele will drive a Geiser Bros. Built Cadillac Escalade Trophy Truck with a Clay Andrews Racing Engine sporting more horse power than ever before. The truck will also be sporting new shoes as Yokohama Tire has developed a new 37 inch tire that has just become available to the public and will for the first time race in Las Vegas.
Also flying the DA colors will be Adam Ashcraft in 1600 who like Steele and Hardesty brings a family tradition of winning to the team. His father Danny Ashcraft is one of the better known names in desert racing and along with Earl Hardesty’s 1980 overall championship and Mark Steele’s multiple Baja 1000 wins it gives the boys a deep wealth of knowledge to learn from.
