Round 2, SCORE Desert Series
Post/MacCachren looking to repeat as pre-running starts
Saturday for 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Over 250 cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs from 20 States, six countries expected in March 15 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—As pre-running starts Saturday for next month’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, veteran desert racers Mark Post and Rob MacCachren are finalizing plans to repeat as overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck winners of the popular spring race. With nine class wins between them in this event, Post, Laguna Beach, Calif. and MacCachren, Las Vegas, are the defending SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall season point champions in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150.
Round 2 of the 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 15 in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
With over 250 entries from 20 states and six countries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2008.
“I just recently returned from finalizing the race course for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, and I'm pleased to report that we have 232 miles of what the sunny side of Baja is all about…moguls, more moguls, sand, silt, canyons, washes, rocks, and a few graded roads,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after it started in 1973.
“After the start, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. San Felipe’s new delegate, Hazael Sierra Castillo, is blading the area approaching the Zoo Road Crossing, which will make it a safer approach than in the past. The area will be fenced and patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action. I really believe racers are really going to enjoy this course. It has everything that makes SCORE desert racing in Baja so challenging and memorable.”
This will be the first time that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash at the start of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja washes—Azufre and Huatomote before heading back Northwest for the final 19.6 miles to the finish line.
"Desert racing is like nothing else in life,” said Post, 50, a top Southern California entrepreneur.
“Sometimes you face incredibly difficult challenges that test you both physically and mentally and put you on the edge…there is nothing better. Heading to San Felipe with the opportunity to put the No. 1 SCORE Trophy-Truck in victory circle is always exciting. Of course, this is one of my favorite races of all time and we’ve been very good here in the past. SCORE racing in Baja is something very special to Riviera Racing and this year I am very proud to introduce the third generation of Riviera Racing drivers. My son, Max (Post, 17), will debut his Riviera Racing Protruck and we are excited to turn him loose.”
Arizona veteran desert racer Pete Sohren and Southern California’s rising star Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions. Sohren races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars is defending season point champion Billy Gasper, Chino Hills, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be defending SCORE Overall ATV and Class 25 point Champion Danny Prather, Ramona, Calif.
Sohren, 43, of Glendale, Ariz., is a veteran SCORE desert racer who has won Class 5 (unlimited VW Baja Bugs) twice in this race (1997 and 2001). He now drives the No. 2 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck, finishing eighth in season points last year after a solid fourth-place finish in the 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
With 20 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Sohren will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.
Bell, 22, of Sun City, Calif., who has won the overall and Class 22 title in this race the past two years will team with legendary SCORE Baja racer Johnny Campbell, 37, San Clemente, Calif., riding the No. 1x Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X.
To date, Class 1-2/600 has the most entries with 25 followed by SCORE Trophy-Truck with 20, Class 1 with 19, SCORE Lite with 15 and Class 5/1600 with 10. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 50 additional late entries are still expected.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, Class 22 (open) has 12 entries and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over) has eight. Leading the Pro ATV entries so far is Class 25 (open) with 12.
Gasper, 40, who won last season’s SCORE Class 1 season point championship with his brother Dave, will drive the No. 100 Chevy-powered Porter open-wheel desert race car in Class 1.
Helping Prather, 27, lead the ATV entries off the line in a Honda TRX450R will be riding mates Mike Cafro, 37, Bonsall, Calif., Levi Marana, 22, Hemet, Calif., and Chad Prull, 32, Laveen, Ariz.
Besides Sohren and Post/MacCachren, the SCORE Trophy-Truck field also includes 2006 overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., in the No. 38 GNR Racing Ford F-150.
Post also won the overall in this race two times with veteran Jerry Whelchel, Portola Hills, Calif. as his second driver (1998 in Class 1 and 2004 in SCORE Trophy-Truck) while MacCachren, 42, with six class wins in San Felipe, also won the overall in this race in 2003 as the second driver for Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico.
Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico, now races as the second driver for his son Gus Vildosola Jr. Considered the top Mexican team in the SCORE Desert Series, the Vildosolas drive the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.
Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 14).
At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 16), the awards celebration will be held in the Plaza on the Malecon.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards.
