B.J. Baldwin leads SCORE Trophy-Truck
Class 1-2/1600 racer Adam Pfankuch leads class and Overall
2008 SCORE Desert Series point standings after three races
Richardson, Dean are top two in unlimited Class 1 points;
Start Drawing for 13th SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 on August 8
LOS ANGELES—After breaking the tie with a fellow California desert racer, Adam Pfankuch now finds himself with a comfortable lead and all by himself at the top of the Overall and Class 1-2/1600 point standings after three rounds of the five-race 2008 SCORE Desert Series. Pfankuch, of Carlsbad, finished third in the season-opener in Laughlin then visited the winner’s circle at the last two races in Mexico to compile 227 championship points to date. He drives a Mirage open-wheel desert race car powered by a 1600cc Volkswagen engine.
Round 4 of the five-race 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be the 13th Annual Terrible’s SCORE Primm 300, to be held Sept. 5-6, in Primm, Nev.. The computerized drawing, by class, for the race, will be held Friday, Aug. 8 at the SCORE International headquarters in Los Angeles.
Chasing Pfankuch in the hunt for the overall and tied for second with 211 points each are two more of the young rising stars in SCORE desert racing—Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin, who leads the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division and Corey Boyer, of Bakersfield, who is second in the current point standings in Class 1-2/1600.
Pfankuch, 26, who owns Powerbox Transaxles, has a few years head start in SCORE racing on Boyer, including two season point championships. He was the second driver for the title team in Class 1-2/1600 SCORE points both in 2003 (with Eric Allen) and in 2004 (with Brian Jeffrey). In 2004, the Jeffrey/Pfankuch tandem was also the SCORE Overall Point champions.
In Laughlin, Pfankuch finished third and then drove solo again to win his class in March’s 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in his 2005 Mirage-VW. In the 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 500, May 31-June 1 in Ensenada, Mexico, Pfankuch also raced in Class 1 and helping him win Class 1-2/1600 by splitting the driving duties was Steven Eugenio, El Centro, Calif.
Baldwin, 28, was the the 2006 SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champion, and this year was second in Laughlin, seventh in San Felipe and earned his third career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in Ensenada to extend his point lead in the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks. Baldwin drives solo in the No. 97 Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado.
“It really feels good to be back up front in the point standings for the SCORE Desert Series,” said Pfankuch. “Between my business and opportunities to race in other classes, it’s been a little hard to keep my focus, but we are 60 percent through the season so hopefully I can run strong to the end.”
Literally taking it one race at a time, California young gun desert racers Boyer and Pfankuch find themselves locked in a duel in Class 1-2/1600 point standings after three rounds of the five-race 2008 SCORE Desert Series. After Boyer, of Bakersfield, won the season-opener in Laughlin, Nev., with Pfankuch, of Carlsbad, placing third, the pair flopped podium positions in San Felipe, Mexico. Pfankuch gained an edge in Ensenada, winning the popular class while Boyer stayed in the hunt with a sixth-place class finish.
Boyer, 23, is a second-generation desert racer who along with his father Rick and brothers Greg and Chris, have spent much of their lives in the desert. Boyer, who works for the family-owned Asbury Transportation trucking business in Bakersfield, was planning on running select SCORE races this year and decided just three days before Laughlin to go ahead and race and go from there. The result was he brought the Boyer Racing Lothringer-VW to the checkered flag in first place in the two-day 14th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Following second place finishes in both Laughlin and San Felipe and a 10th in Ensenada, Las Vegas’ veteran desert racer B.J. Richardson is fourth in the Overall and leads the unlimited Class 1 point standings in the 2008 SCORE Desert Series while his teammate Pat Dean is fifth in overall points and second in Class 1.
Racing for the Las Vegas Dissemination Company team in near-identical Chevy-powered Bunderson open-wheel desert race cars that are prepped by Valley Performance, Richardson has 207 points while Dean is right behind with 205.
While the top five SCORE Overall point leaders are separated by just 22 points, the second five and the third five are even closer with just two points separating each group.
In a three-way tie for sixth in overall points with 190 are Mark Post/Rob MacCachren, Rod Hall and Donald Moss.
Post, Laguna Beach, Calif., and MacCachren, Las Vegas, are second in SCORE Trophy-Truck points while Hall, Reno, Nev., and Moss, Sacramento, Calif., lead their respective classes after each winning the first three races of the season
Post/MacCachren, the reigning SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champions with 14 career SCORE Trophy-Truck class race wins between them, did not finish in Laughlin, but have quickly climbed back into contention with second place finishes in both San Felipe and Ensenada in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150. In the closest finish in race history, the pair finished a mere seven seconds behind B.J. Baldwin in the overall and class battle at the recent 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada.
Hall, who has 13 career SCORE class season point titles including three SCORE Overall point championships, leads the Stock Mini class in a Hummer H3 while Moss, who has five career SCORE class season point crowns and 28 individual class race wins, is way out front in Class 3 in a Ford Bronco.
Ninth in overall points with 189 is Class 5/1600 point leader Marcos Nunez, Ensenada, Mexico, in a VW Baja Bug while 10th overall and third in Class 1 is the team of Chuck Dempsey, Oak Hills, Calif./Mark Levrett, Sparks, Nev., with 188 points in a HMS-Chevy..
With motorcycles and ATVs racing in the three SCORE Baja races, the team of Robby Bell, Sun City, Calif./Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, Calif., lead the overall motorcycle and open Class 22 standings with 168 points after winning both in San Felipe and Ensenada on the factory-supported No. 1x Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X. Bell/Campbell won in San Felipe and Bell/Norman won in Ensenada.
On top of the ATV classes overall is the Class 24 team of Francisco Servin/Isaac Castro/Rocky Merino, of Chula Vista, Calif., with 73 points on a Honda TRX450R after their San Felipe and Ensenada race wins.
Starting the third five at 11th in overall points with 187 is Class 11 point leader Ramon Fernandez, Ensenada, Mexico, who has two race wins in his stock VW Sedan.
Currently 12th in overall points with 186 and fourth in Class 1 is Mexico’s Luis Ramirez Jr., who won his class in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
In a three-way tie for 13th place with 185 points are Heidi Steele, Robbie Pierce and Armin Schwarz with 185 points each. Steele, San Clemente, Calif., leads Class 7SX where she has two race wins in the Desert Assasins Ford Ranger while Pierce, Santee, Calif., continues to enjoy his rookie season in SCORE Trophy-Truck where he is third in points in the No. 35 MasterCraft Racing Chevy Silverado and Schwarz, the noted German WRC racer who has shifted careers to the desert and won his class in San Felipe, is fifth in Class 1 with teammate Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif., in the All-German Auto Jimco-BMW.
Besides Steele, the other female racer who is leading a SCORE class so far in 2008 is Anna Cody, Spring Valley, Calif., who leads an all-female motorcycle team in Class 20 with one race win with co-riders Stacy Doerkson, Apple Valley, Calif./Cathy Duncan, Los Alamos, Calif./Sarah Kritch, Bakersfield, Calif., on a Honda CRF250X.
Among the car and truck classes, other point leaders after two races include: Dan Chamlee, Cupertino, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Kevin Carr, San Diego (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), Noah Ostanik, Encinitas, Calif. (Class 8, Ford F-150), Mike Lawrence, Brea, Calif. (Class 10, Lothringer-VW), Steve Mamer, Holtville, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Raceco-VW) and Chad Hall, Reno, Nev. (Stock Full, Hummer H3Alpha). Carr and Hall both have two class wins this season while Chamlee and Ostanik have one and Lawrence and Mamer are leading their class point standings without a win so far.
Among the other motorcycle classes, three defending season class champions are in first in their respective classes after two of the three SCORE Baja races. After wins in San Felipe, reigning champs leading the class points this year are: Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif. (Class 30, Honda CRF450X and Class 50, Honda CRF450X), Carlos Casas, Chula Vista, Calif. (Class 21, KTM 450CXF), Brett Helm, Poway, Calif. (Class 40, Honda XR650R) and Donald Lewis, Marlborough, Conn. (Class 60, Honda CRF450X).
Leading Class 25 for open ATVs after winning both races so far this year is the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Marc Spaeth, Warner Springs, Calif. With a different third rider and vehicle each race, they won in Ensenada with Wes Miller, El Cajon, Calif. as the third rider earning the first SCORE race win for the new Honda TRX700XX all-terrain vehicle.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards for car and truck racers who complete every required mile of the season.
