Mammoth Mountain to Host Oldest Motocross Race in the USA

Mammoth Lakes, Calif. (April 25, 2008)-- Motocross riders are set to wage an epic battle when the Ford Mammoth Motocross, the oldest continuous running motocross in the USA on June 19 – 29, 2008.

The event is a huge draw for both racers and spectators who enjoy the rush of watching the country’s best competitors.

Many of the top racers in the world have honed their skills at this event and many have made a name for themselves on the Mammoth track. Riders such as Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Rick Johnson, Johnny O'Mara, Broc Glover, Donny Schmitt, Steve Lamson, Gary Jones, Kevin Windham, David Bailey, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Bob Hannah, James Stewart, Mike Bell, Donny Hansen and many more have participated in the event.

Mammoth Motocross also has become known as one of the major amateur events in the country. The competition draws the factory riders of tomorrow.

Practice sessions begin on June 19 with competition starting on Saturday, June 21, when the Vets take to the track for a two-day event. The Mini racers compete Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25, while the 450cc (301cc+), Women, and Schoolboy event takes place Friday, June 27. The motocross nears its exhilarating climax on Saturday, June 28 with the 250cc (144cc 2 stroke /250F) taking over the track. The competition wraps up on Sunday, June 29 with the Open competition (450/250F/250cc).

On Saturday evening, June 28, spectators and riders can gather at The Village at Mammoth for the Official Motocross Party. The gathering will feature live entertainment, appearances by the competitors, a festive atmosphere, and the chance to socialize with fellow motocross fans.

The event began in 1968, when Don Rake and his friends organized the first motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California. They built a world-class track at 8,000 above sea level in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Dave McCoy, the founder of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, enthusiastically supported the motocross and helped nurture its growth throughout the initial years.

Fans looking to get close to the action can take advantage of the Stay and Moto package. The package is valid from June 18th-June 30th and includes lodging, a spectator ticket for each night stayed and a commemorative T-shirt for each adult on the reservation and starts at $89 per person, per night, restrictions apply

In between watching or participating in the motocross, both spectators and racers can enjoy the abundance of outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, riding the gondola to 11,053-foot Mammoth Mountain or playing a round of golf.
