First Ever Diesel Motorcycle Entry in the SCORE Baja 250

ePRESS RELEASE – February 16, 2009
Strategic Racing Designs

Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT) USA, the maker of the world's only motorcycle purpose built diesel motorcycle engine, is entering the 2009 SCORE International Baja 250 which will be run in San Felipe, Mexico on March 14th. The world renowned off-road race will serve as a proving ground for the well tested and well prepared composite race team made up of members from HDT USA and Team SRD. The newly formed team will combine their successes from the diesel motorcycle land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats and their class 22 podium producing finish in the 2008 SCORE Baja 500.

In the early '70s HDT raced and sold Pentons (early KTMs) and produced high-performance suspension and engine parts for motocrossers. In 2000 they sent the Marines their first diesel prototype motorcycle (based on the Kawasaki KLR650) for testing; the production model was delivered by HDT in September of 2006. Current owner of HDT Fred Hayes and associate Bryon Schmidt—both veterans—enjoy using racing to develop diesel record-breaking motorcycles at Bonneville. HDT USA is honored to serve the men and women of our Armed Forces by providing the best equipment possible. HDT USA is proud to provide the best in diesel motorcycle technology to both our government and civilian customers.

Longtime motorcycle enthusiast Bryon Schmidt will be the team's rider of record. Bryon (42), from Hesperia, California, serves as a chief diesel motorcycle maintenance consultant and senior testing specialist for HDT USA which is under contract with the Department of Defense for the production of the military version of the diesel motorcycle. Bryon was hired by HDT USA after faithfully completing a successful career in the US Marine Corps having been the chief instructor at the USMC Combat Motorcycle School.

Kirk Russell (46), from Bend, Oregon, will ride the second half the 232 mile race, starting at race mile 120. Kirk was a member of the 2008 SRD race team that made its first appearance on the podium in the Baja 500. Kirk brings four decades of racing experience to the team. He is also the first one that raced the 670cc diesel motorcycle in any off-road sanctioned race. In that inaugural race, Kirk held his own in a 2008 AMA District 38 desert race by completing the first lap as one of the first 10 bikes to come in – he was competing in the Open, Expert class. Even more impressive was the fact that it was his very first time to ride the 420 lb motorcycle. Kirk is a former #1 plate holder for the Oregon Desert Racing Organization (ODRA).

Jeff Smith (46), from Oceanside, California, will serve as the team's backup rider. Jeff also develops the training plan to support the riders in their preparation for the race as well as writes the rider’s “Smart Pack” and chase team’s logistical “Chase Plan” to execute the race in a seamless and well orchestrated fashion. Jeff credits Kirk and his father Mike Russell for introducing him into desert racing as they first started racing together in the mid-1970s. Jeff’s also brings a fierce competitive spirit to the team from having served 22 years in the US Marine Corps.

The dynamic duo of Justin & Heather Herrmann (24 & 23), from Vista, California provide the “logistical support” to HDT USA / Team SRD. Strategic Racing Designs (SRD) is co-owned by these two award winning & enterprising high-performance off-road fabrication specialists. In addition to designing & building “one-off” products for the demanding off-road industry, Justin brings a decade & a half of motocross / supercross racing experience to the team. Having reached the pinnacle of his suppercross career, and now turning his interests toward the off-road industry, Justin’s racing consultation, enthusiasm and mechanical expertise serve the team well. Heather’s background in administration, parts & service round out the team’s needs as she brings years of experience running the “front office”. She also designs industry oriented eye catching graphics for team vehicles and team apparel and documents team events with unsurpassed video presentations.
With Sal Fish & SCORE International heavily promoting the use of alternative fuels and “greener” race vehicles, HDT USA / Team SRD is both proud & excited to introduce the off-road world to the capabilities, performance & endurance of the diesel motorcycle as they compete in the infamous Baja Series off-road races.

SCORE San Felipe Draw Results 2.15.09

February 15, 2009

Rd 2, 2009 SCORE Desert Series

Jefferies in SCORE Trophy-Truck, Bell in Motorcycles draw

First starting slots for 23rd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Josh Rigsby receives first Class 1 start as nearly 225 entries

Expected in March 14 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—Champion Southern California desert racers Damen Jefferies and Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Saturday for the upcoming 23rd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Jefferies races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.

Round 2 of the 2009 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 13-15 in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.

With nearly 225 entries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232.4-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 14, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. local time. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.

Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2009.

Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Josh Rigsby of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Riding the first ATV off the line will be Class 25 rider Adolfo Arellano, Tijuana, Mexico.

Jefferies, 36, of Apple Valley, Calif., is a veteran SCORE desert racer who has three career SCORE Class season point titles in three different classes, including the 1997 SCORE Overall point championships. Also a successful desert chassis builder, Jefferies is racing the No. 22 Jefferies Racing Chevy Silverado this year with Luis Ramirez Jr. of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Jefferies is eighth in his class point standings this year after finishing fifth last season.

With 20 entries so far in the marquee SCORE racing division for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Jefferies will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.

Last year’s top overall finishers have all entered this year even though one is with a new team. Leading the defending race champions group is four-wheel vehicle overall winner Brian Collins, Las Vegas, who will start 10th in the 20-truck SCORE Trophy-Truck class in the No. 12 Collins Motorsports Dodge Ram1500.

Bell, 23, of Sun City, Calif., has left the factory Honda team after winning the two-wheel overall title in San Felipe the last three years and will be teamed with another former Honda rider Mike Childress on the No. 1x Kawasaki KX450F. Bell drew the first start last year as well for the JCR team owned by SCORE Baja racing legend Johnny Campbell.

Campbell, who won his race-record seventh Overall motorcycle and eighth motorcycle class title in this race last year while riding with Bell, has entered two Honda CRF450X teams in this year’s race for the JCR team. Rider of record on one bike will be Kendall Norman, who has two overall wins in San Felipe, and the team’s other rider of record Colton Udall is a rookie on the team and making his first San Felipe start.

In Saturday’s computerized drawing, SCORE Trophy-Truck had the most entries with 20, followed by the unlimited Class 1 and Class 1-2/1600 with 14 each. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 50 additional entries are expected.

Defending SCORE overall series and race ATV and Class 25 champion Wayne Matlock, El Cajon has entered this year once again with Harold Goodman Jr., Brownsville, Mich. and a new third rider-Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif.

Besides Collins, Bell and Matlock the other defending class winners entered so far this year are: Germany’s Armin Schwarz (Class 1), Donald Moss, Sacramento (Class 3), Marcos Nunez, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 5/1600), John Holmes, Olivenhain, Calif. (Class 7SX), Rodrigo Ampudia Jr., Ensenada, Mexico (Class 8), Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11), Anna Cody, Simi Valley, Calif. (Class 20), Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif. (Class 30) and Bret Helm, Poway, Calif. (Class 40-Scott Myers is rider of record this year).

Also back to defend his Sportsman class win among those entered to date is Sportsman Car winner Peter Lang.

This year’s race will use the same 232.4-mile race course as 2008, running in a counter clockwise direction out of San Felipe up to and then along Highway 3 and back down through three of the most picturesque and challenging washes in all of Baja. Pre-running will officially open for participants in the event on Saturday, Feb. 28.

After the start at the landmark San Felipe Arches, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. The area approaching the Zoo Road crossing was bladed last year, which makes it a safer approach to the popular spectator area. That area will again be fenced and patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action. The course will run again this year in a counterclockwise direction.

This will be one of the few times that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash in the early part of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja washes—Azufre and Huatomote before heading back Northwest for the final 19.6 miles to the finish line.

The pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection of the vehicles in the race will be held on Friday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the picturesque Malecon, flanked by the Sea of Cortez on one side and the popular restaurants and night clubs of San Felipe on the other.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 15), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.

Following his dominating season-opening victory at the 15th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, NASCAR Cup owner/driver Robby Gordon finds himself at the top of a very crowded Overall leaderboard in the 2009 SCORE Desert Series point standings. With 54 points, Gordon, who returned to his desert racing roots, also leads the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck class for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks in his No. 77 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500.

With just 14 points separating the top 21 in 2009 SCORE Overall points, SCORE racers are now preparing to begin official pre-running.

In addition to season point class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 24th consecutive year, a total of 52 drivers remain eligible after Round 1 of the 2009 SCORE Desert Series.

Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Volkswagen of America-official vehicle, Sunoco Race Fuels -official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant and Red Bull--official energy drink. Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Las Vegas Events, Terrible Herbst Inc., Blue C Enthusiast Advertising, Off-Road, American Suzuki, SignPros, P.C.I. Race Radios, McKenzie’s Performance Products and Advanced Color Graphics.

Associate sponsors for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 are the Tourism and Convention Bureau of Mexicali/San Felipe, and Cotuco.

The race annually provides a greater economic impact to San Felipe than the entire month-long ‘Spring Break’.

For more information regarding the series, contact SCORE at its Los Angeles headquarters 818.225.8402 or visit the official website of the 2009 SCORE Desert Series at www.score-international.com.

ING to end F1 sponsorship

Renault title sponsor ING are to withdraw from the sport from next year, a statement issued by the team has confirmed. The Dutch banking firm has suffered as a result of the global financial crisis and rumours had circulated that it intended to reduce its involvement in the sport in the light of recent difficulties.

The group is the title sponsor of Renault, and also provides trackside sponsorship at a number of grands prix, including the Australian event in Melbourne. The Renault deal alone is believed to be worth around ˆ12m, which would leave the Anglo-French team with a budget hole to fill for the 2009 season.

The statement issued by ING said: “In light of the recently announced cost reduction programme, ING confirmed today not to renew the three year sponsorship (2007-2009) contract with Renault F1 and to end its presence in F1 beyond the 2009 season.

“ING’s participation in Formula One was the company’s first global sponsorship project aimed at delivering revenue and raising the global brand awareness, particularly in ING’s key growth markets. Over the past two years, ING has successfully achieved its objectives for the F1 sponsorship, raising its overall global brand awareness by 16% (March 07 vs November 08).

“F1 remains a powerful business driver even in a difficult economic climate. Whilst ING has cut the F1 sponsorship costs by 40% in the final year, revenue generating opportunities will be a continuing focus through 2009. ING has enjoyed the relationship with Renault F1 and will continue to work closely with the team during the final year of the partnership.”

ROCKSTAR's Rob MacCachren DEFEATS Huge Field of 1600 Racers in BATTLE AT PRIMM

ROCKSTAR's Rob MacCachren DEFEATS Huge Field of 1600 Racers in BATTLE AT PRIMM

robbap Primm, Nevada (February 16, 2009) Desert racing veteran, Rob MacCachren, kicked off the 2009 1600 racing season with a strong victory after outperforming a huge field of nearly 50 1600 racers in SNORE's season opener, Battle at Primm.

Many of the nation's top 1600 racers converged for the two-day shootout, which continues to grow each year. It is considered as the race 1600 racers do not want to miss.

Battling over 92 miles each day, racers blasted around the difficult 18-mile course for five laps. Set adjacent to some of the most famous landmarks in Southern Nevada, the Primm Valley Casinos, which divide Nevada and California, thousands of fans and racers gathered together to watch the nation's best 1600 racers go head-to-head.

MacCachren debuted his brand new ALUMI CRAFT single-seat 1600 car on Friday afternoon at the Battle at Primm Contingency event amid the cold and wet weather. Parked in the FOX RACING SHOX booth, hundreds of onlookers stopped to view the satin black ROCKSTAR Energy Drink branded 1600 car.

"The new car built by ALUMI CRAFT is great. Sleek, simple and fast. We're looking forward to racing the new car in as many races as possible this season," said a smiling Rob MacCachren.

robbapMacCachren began Saturday's race in the second to last row after SNORE officials made a mistake, which they later apologized for. This forced the savvy desert racing veteran to pass through the majority of the field in order to begin up front in Sunday's final race.

"I'm not sure he ever lifted from the start line," said crew chief Ian Beaman referring to Saturday's race.

"After the third lap, he was mid-pack having passed 20 + cars and then after the fourth lap, he cut that in half. By the final lap, Rob was pushing towards the front of the pack and apparently the car ran pretty good."

Official results released by SNORE timing officials showed the nation's top 1600 racer, Rob MacCachren, had finished Saturday's race in first place, 11 seconds faster than the car that left the line first.

Sunday morning saw near perfect race conditions, as Rob MacCachren rolled out his BFGoodrich Tires shod racecar. The #1603 FAT Performance powered single-seat car lined up on the front row beside Curt Geer, in what turned out to be the best match of the two-day race.

robbap"Neither one of us lifted and we went off the dike jump side-by-side. I looked over and saw him pushing hard and I just ran this car as fast as it would go. FOX Racing Shox has worked closely with me in testing and I knew the car could take anything we punished it with. In the end, it did. The course turned pretty rough in the last few laps, with big ruts in the turns, but the new car is fast. Every time I thought I was making time and starting to pull away, I saw Geer closing in on me. There are a lot of really fast 1600 racers out here and it was a great race, I'm glad we came out on top today," commented Rob.

MacCachren led after the first jump and he never looked back. Each lap he pulled slightly pulled away from the field crossing the finish line for his first 1600 victory of the year.

MacCachren will next race his 1600 car at the SCORE San Felipe 250 after racing the Riviera Racing #3 Trophy Truck in the morning and switching to the 1600 car in the afternoon. Two weeks later, on March 28, 2009, Rob MacCachren will race the historic MINT 400 held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rob MacCachren is sponsored by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink , BFGoodrich Tires, ALUMI CRAFT, FOX RACING SHOX, Fat Performance, Dave FOLTS Transmission, KARTEK, Pro-AM, Mastercraft Race Seats and Nevada OFFROAD Buggy.
