racers and ranchers

Racers and Ranchers is pleased to announce our third community service project in support of our mission to establish and preserve relationships between Baja’s land owners and those who enjoy the sport of off-roading. In conjunction with Ejidatario Sierra Juarez, Racers and Ranchers will conduct a “makeover” of a small community building used by the Ejidatario for cooking and serving meals. The building is part of an Ejidatario area used by local ranchers for meetings, community events, children’s parties, etc. It is located at El Aserradero (“Sawmill”), across from the famous Ramona’s on the south side of the Parque Nacional, approximately 48 miles east of Ensenada.

The building requires a roof, windows, doors, paint and a general clean-up. Racers and Ranchers is assessing the materials and manpower required and has planned a 2-day working event on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19, 2008.

Ejidatario Sierra Juarez consists of several ranch and land owners in the Sierra Juarez range, of which Familia Ramona is one. Many are off-roaders themselves and want to help in improving relationships with the many off-road visitors in an effort to keep speeds and dust minimized, gates and fences intact, preservation of riding privileges, and overall safety in the area. Racers and Ranchers thinks this is an outstanding opportunity to “give back” what many off-roaders have long taken for granted.

Racers and Ranchers is seeking present and future members to assist in the makeover. If you are adept at pounding some nails, rolling or brushing paint, or other simple “makeover” chores, we need your help. If you are challenged in this respect, we can also use some help in general clean-up.

Additionally, Racers and Ranchers is looking for donations of building materials such as wood, nails, doors, windows, paint, brushes, furnishings, etc. plus loan of some tools. Detailed lists will be provided shortly.

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY. The cost of the event will be a donation split equally by participants for the purchase of any remaining items required to complete the makeover after seeing what materials our members can offer. We hope to arrive at a figure at the end of next week.

Participants are requested to meet across from Ramona’s on Saturday, October 18, at 11AM. We will knock off before sunset and re-commence Sunday morning at 8AM for a half day’s work. Participants are responsible for their own lodging, but can be obtained camping at the beautiful Laguna Hanson in the National Park, several Ensenada hotels, or haciendas at Rancho Rodeo del Rey or Rancho Santa Veronica. The event is designed for participants to drive or ride to Ramona’s on Saturday morning and drive/ride back on Sunday afternoon. Burrito lunch is available at El Aserradero (Sawmill) and a Saturday evening barbeque is being planned, location TBD.
