Racing Accident Claims Life of 19 year old Brandon Smith at
TSCO “Vegas to Reno” Event
Best in the Desert Race Director, Casey Folks, reports there was one fatality in the TSCO
“Vegas to Reno” event held last weekend in Nevada. 19-year-old Brandon Smith was riding
entry number 327 in the Open Expert division, as part of the father-son team of Kurt and Craig
Carlson, based in Hesperia CA, when he crashed and succumbed from his injuries.
Folks said,”I am very sorry to report at approximately 4 pm Friday, August 24th, Brandon Smith
died from injuries sustained in a solo accident during the running of the race. He was thrown
from his bike and impacted the terrain. My thanks to John Gaughan, who arranged to have the
helicopter providing support to the TSCO team dispatched to the scene, and medical care
reached Brandon in a short time. Unfortunately, he died at the scene of the accident.”
The County Sheriff determined it was a single-vehicle accident, and ruled it did not appear to be
the result of an impact with another vehicle.
“It’s sad for me to have to deliver this type of news. We work hard to run a safe race, but racing
in itself is dangerous. I spoke with Brandon’s father who commented to me that at least he died
doing something he loved. Our condolences to his family and friends; we have lost a friend and
member of the racing community.”
