LIVE start draw for 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 on April 24 at MasterCraft Safety facility

LOS ANGELES—Third generation desert racer Andy McMillin continues to lead the point standings in the 2010 SCORE Desert Series but his competition got a lot closer after the recent 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. McMillin, 23, is the SCORE Overall point leader as he leads the standings in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division for the five-race 2010 SCORE Desert Series.

Starting the 2010 SCORE season off with an impressive victory in Laughlin, McMillin, of National City, Calif., where heearned his third career race win in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck class for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks in his No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150. In Round 2 in San Felipe on March 13, he split the driving with his father Scott McMillin and they survived mechanical issues to finish sixth in class to maintain his SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck point lead with 134 championship points.

Round 3 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will be the 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 500, June 4-6, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The live drawing for the 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs will be held on Saturday, April 24 at the new MasterCraft Safety facility in Santee, Calif., near San Diego.

Second in overall points and in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck standings is the San Felipe winner Jesse Jones, Litchfield Park, Ariz., who is just two points behind Andy McMillin in his No. 76 Ford F-150.

Third in overall points and in SCORE Trophy-Truck following a second in Laughlin and an 11th in San Felipe is Las Vegas’ Kory Scheeler with 123 points in his No. 51 RTR Motorsports Ford F-150.

With just 30 points separating the top 20 overall point leaders after the first two rounds of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series, the McMillin family actually has four racers among the top 11 point leaders after the first two races.

Mark McMillin, Andy’s uncle, finished 15th in SCORE Trophy-Truck and is tied for 11th in SCORE Overall points (with Class 6 point leader Dave Caspino, Woodland Hills, Calif) and sixth in SCORE Trophy-Truck with 112 points in his No. 23 McMillin Racing Ford F-150. Mark’s sons Daniel and Luke McMillin are also in the top 10 overall point leaders after solid performances in Laughlin and San Felipe.

Daniel McMillin, 22, finished third in the unlimited Class 1 in Laughlin and second in San Felipe to lead his class and is fourth in overall points with 120 in the McMillin Racing Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car. Luke McMillin, the youngest of the McMillin racers at 17, finished fifth in Laughlin and second in San Felipe in Class 1-2/1600 in the new McMillin Racing AlumiCraft-VW and is tied for ninth in the SCORE Overall point standings (with SCORE Lite point leader Brent Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif.) and second in his class with 113 points after the first two races.

“My late grandfather Corky McMillin started McMillin Racing and our family has been racing in SCORE races since 1976 and whatever we accomplish is a direct reflection of the legacy that he built in his wonderful lifetime,” said Andy McMillin. “As a family and a team, we are following in his template and we are really firing on all cylinders right now. He would have been really enjoying this if he were alive, but he is always with us in spirit. We can’t help being in a race vehicle and not remember Grandpa.”

SCORE points are based on starting and finishing as well as the number of starters in each class and placement position in every race.

Fifth in SCORE overall points and second in Class 1 is another third-generation Southern California desert racer. Kory Halopoff, 26 of Orange, who has 116 points in the Letner Racing Tatum-Chevy following his class win in Laughlin and a 10th in San Felipe. After driving solo in Laughlin, he split the seat time in San Felipe with his normal teammate Harley Letner, 26 of Orange.

Tied for sixth in SCORE Overall points with 115 are Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren, who is fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the No. 20 MasterCraft Racing Chevy Silverado, and Cody Robinson, El Centro, Calif., who is leading Class 1-2/1600 with teammate Roberto Romo, Mexicali, Mexico, after their class win in San Felipe in a Romo-VW.

February 14, 2010

Rd 2, 2010 SCORE Desert Series

Whitton in SCORE Trophy-Truck, Bell in Motorcycles draw first

Starts for 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Schwarz receives first Class 1 start as nearly 275 entries expected in March 13 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—Desert racers Ron Whitton of Arizona and Southern California’s Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Saturday for the upcoming 24th Annual MasterCraft SafetyTecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Whitton races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.

Round 2 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 12-14 in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located 120 miles south of the U.S. borer on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.

With nearly 275 entries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday, March 13, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. local time. The start and finish line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.

Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2010.

Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Germany’s Armin Schwarz and teammate Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be Class 25 team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif.

With a race-record 32 entries so far in the marquee SCORE racing division for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Whitton, 66, owner of one of the largest plumbing contractor companies in Arizona, will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers in the No. 39 Whitton Companies Ford F-150. Whitton, Mesa, Ariz., and his co-driver Chas Dana were fifth and 10th respectively in last year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Last year’s overall motorcycle and ATV winners are entered this year. Last year’s overall motorcycle champion was the JCR Honda team of Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Tim Weigand, Santa Clarita, Calif. on the No. 1x Honda CRF450X and the Overall ATV winners were the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Harold Goodman Jr., Brownstown, Mich./Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif., on the No. 1a Honda TRX700X. Norman’s team will start seventh in Motorcycles while Matlock’s squad will be the first ATV off the line.

Bell, 24, of Sun City, Calif., who left the factory Honda team at the end of 2008 after winning the two-wheel overall title in San Felipe three straight years (2006, 2007, 2008), returns to San Felipe for the first time since on a Kawasaki, leading a two-motorcycle Bruce Penhall Motorsports charge to Baja on the No. 2x Kawasaki KX450F. His co-rider, also a former Honda champion, is legendary SCORE Baja racer Steve Hengeveld, 34, Oak Hills, Calif., who was the overall San Felipe motorcycle winner for four straight year’s with Honda icon Johnny Campbell (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004).

Kawasaki will have factory-supported entries in San Felipe for this first time since 1996 and will attempt to break the JCR Racing Honda dynasty which has won 12 of the last 13 SCORE San Felipe 250 races.

In the first 23 years of this race, Honda has earned 14 overall motorcycle victories (including the last four years), Kawasaki has six, KTM has two and Husqvarna has one.

In Saturday’s computerized drawing, SCORE Trophy-Truck had the most entries with 32, followed by the unlimited Class 1 with 18 and Class 1-2/1600 with 12. While 192 entries were received in time for the start draw, late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 100 additional entries are expected.

Among the motorcycle classes, the open Class 22 had the most vehicles entered in the drawing with 11.

Besides the K. Norman and Matlock teams, the other defending class winners entered so far this year are: Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1), Mike Lawrence, Sunset Beach, Calif. (Class 10), Marc Burnett, Chula Vista, Calif. (Class 6), Jose Canchola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico (Class 7 but has switched to Class 6), Dave Crinklaw, Reedley, Calif. (Class 8), Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11), Gavin Skilton, Anaheim, Calif. (Stock Mini), Mike Johnson, El Paso, Texas (Class 30), Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif. (Class 50), Craig Christy, Burbank, Calif. (Class 24), Reid Rutherford, Montrose, Colo. (Class 26 but has switched to Class 7-2) and returning with SCORE Trophy-Truck regular Cameron Steele as rider of record is Brian Campbell, Bakersfield, Calif. (Class 40).

Christy, last season’s SCORE Overall and Class 24 ATV season point champion, has also entered a team that he will lead this year in Class 25 as well, seeking a pair of class wins in San Felipe.

Also returning this year to defend his Sportsman class race victory for the third straight year among those entered so far is Sportsman Car winner Peter Lang, Santa Rosa, Calif.

This year’s race will use a similar 232-mile race course as the past two years with a few modifications other than those caused by weather conditions. Running in a counter clockwise direction out of San Felipe up to and then parallel to Highway 3 (southside) and south back down through three of the most picturesque and challenging washes in all of Baja.

After the start at the landmark San Felipe Arches, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. The area approaching the Zoo Road crossing has been bladed again, which makes it a safer approach to the popular spectator area. That area will again be fenced, have grandstands and a jump and will be patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action.

For the first time the course will travel east of instead of on the graded Morelia Road (after the Zoo Road junction) to the entrance to Matomi Wash. This will be one of the few times that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash in the early part of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja canyons—Huatomote and Chanate before heading back Northwest for the final sprint to the finish line.

The pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection of the vehicles in the race will be held on Friday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the picturesque Malecon, flanked by the Sea of Cortez on one side and the popular restaurants and night clubs of San Felipe on the other.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 14), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.

At the 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, MasterCraft Racing has entered not only company owner Robbie Pierce’s No. 30 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck, but also the No. 20 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck to be driven by eight-time SCORE season class point champion Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas and the No. 42 Chevy Silverado driven by Will Staats, Valencia, Calif. All three trucks were built by prominent chassis builder Mike Julson’s Jimco Racing Products of Santee, Calif. Julson is listed as a co-driver for both Pierce and MacCachren for this race, if needed.

The MasterCraft racers will not be eligible to win any part of the special $10,000 MasterCraft Safety cash contingency bonus purse MasterCraft Safety has offered for this year’s San Felipe race.

In San Felipe, Pierce will start fourth, MacCachren 21st and Staats 25th in the massive SCORE Trophy-Truck field.

Following his dominating season-opening victory at the 16th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, third-generation desert racer Andy McMillin, who was recently honored as the 2009 Dirt Sports Magazine Driver of the Year, finds himself at the top of a very crowded Overall leaderboard in the 2010 SCORE Desert Series point standings. With 63 points, McMillin, who will split driving the rest of the season with his father Scott McMillin, also leads the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck class for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks in his No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150.

With just 22 points separating the top 21 in 2010 SCORE Overall points after Laughlin’s season-opener, SCORE racers are now preparing to begin official pre-running which opens on Saturday, Feb. 27. A new attraction this year during the pre-running window will be the San Felipe Tequila Festival March 5-7.

In addition to season class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings as well as earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 25th consecutive year, a total of 59 drivers remain eligible after Round 1 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series. Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.

Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Volkswagen of America-official vehicle, Sunoco Race Fuels-official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant and Red Bull-official energy drink. SCORE San Felipe Advance

February 9, 2010

Nearly 250 entries expected

Course finalized; computerized Start draw Saturday at SCORE

For 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Top 10 in SCORE Trophy-Truck & Class 1 from 2009 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 to have special draw

LOS ANGELES—Many of the world’s top desert racers are expected to be entered in time for Saturday’s computerized start draw for next month’s 24th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race. With the drawing being held at the SCORE International headquarters in Los Angeles, the race itself will be held March 12-14 along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

With entries accepted up to race morning, nearly 250 entries from over 20 US States and 10 countries expected to enter the race and competition will be held in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours after the last Sportsman ATV later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. The start line and finish line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.

Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will be visiting Mexico for the first of three annual SCORE Baja races in 2010.

“I just returned from finalizing the course and other details for the race and I can’t tell you how enthusiastic my reception was along with the interest and support I received from the community, officials and ejidos--it was really overwhelming,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after SCORE was founded in 1973. “The course is very similar as last year, with a few exceptions and our pre and post-race festivities will once again be held or centered on and near the picturesque Malecon beachfront and we are excepting a great entry field so this year’s event should be something very spectacular. Some of the course changes will actually help making vehicle support chasing easier. The new highway over the last section entering town from the Highway 3 junction is four lanes, nearly finished and there are more hotels and condos then we have ever seen before in San Felipe.”

A unique part of Saturday’s drawing will be the special drawing for the top 10 finishers from the nearest previous SCORE Baja race entered in the current race in both SCORE Trophy-Truck and the unlimited Class 1. For this race it will be the top 10 finishers in each class from last November’s 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

The top 10 finishers in SCORE Trophy-Truck from the 2009 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 were: Andy McMillin/Scott McMillin, Roger Norman/Larry Roeseler, Rick D. Johnson/Brian Sallee, Gus Vildosola Jr./Gus Vildosola Sr., Robby Gordon, Robbie Pierce/Mike Julson, Mark McMillin/Brian Ewalt, Cameron Steele/Rick Geiser, Tim Herbst/Troy Herbst and Ron Whitton/Chas Danna.

In the unlimited Class 1, the top 10 finishers from the 2009 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 were: Jerry Penhall/Dan Martin, Armin Schwarz/Martin Christensen, Randy Wilson/Ronny Wilson, Chuck Dempsey/John Marking, Richard Boyle/Ron Brant, Dale Lenk/Brett Lenk/Grant Lenk, Todd Welling/Chad Cummings, Brian Parkhouse/Tom Ridings, Chuck Sacks/Gerald Longo and T.J. Flores/Pat Dean.

The start draw for Round 2 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will determine the starting order within each of the various classes in the race. With a cash purse and contingency of nearly $400,000, this year’s race will also include the special $10,000 MasterCraft Safety bonus cash contingency purse offered to several classes.

Last year’s top overall motorcycle and ATV finishers are already entered this year. Last year’s overall motorcycle champion was the JCR Honda team of Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Tim Weigand, Santa Clarita, Calif. on a Honda CRF450X and the Overall ATV winners were the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Harold Goodman Jr., Brownstown, Mich./Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif., on a Honda TRX700X.

Las Vegas’ Brian Collins, the two-time defending Overall 4-Wheel and SCORE Trophy-Truck winner, has not entered this year’s race as of today.

Among the other 2009 class winners already entered is the unlimited Class 1 winning Wilson Motorsports team of Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. in their Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car, Mike Lawrence, Sunset Beach, Calif. (Class 10, Lothringer-VW), Kevin Carr, San Diego (Class 5, unlimited VW Baja Bug), Mike Johnson, El Paso, Texas (Class 30, Honda CRF450X), Brian Campbell, Bakersfield, Calif. (Class 40, KTM 450XCF and Craig Christy, Burbank, Calif. (Class 24, Honda TRX450R).

In addition to season point class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season.

Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Las Vegas Events, MasterCraft Safety, Blue C Advertising, Off-Road, SignPros, P.C.I. Associate sponsors for the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 are the Tourism and Convention Bureau of Mexicali/San Felipe and Cotuco.

Additional sponsors in Baja are the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California and ProTurismo de Ensenada.

The race annually provides a greater economic impact to San Felipe than the popular month-long ‘Spring Break’.

Andy McMillin qualifies in his No. 31 McMillin Racing Ford F-150 fastest

To earn pole for Saturday’s first day of SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge

LAUGHLIN, Nev.–Returning to SCORE desert racing on a fulltime basis for the first time in three years, San Diego’s third-generation racer Andy McMillin earned the pole position for the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge Friday as he powered his No. 31 McMillin Racing Ford F-150 to a fast time of 7 minutes, 03.40 seconds during qualifying for SCORE Trophy-Trucks averaging 53.19 miles per hour around the 6.25-mile loop.

The season opener of the five-race 2010 SCORE Desert Series, is being held near the banks of the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nev.

“We had a nice clean run today and hope the pole position helps gain an edge during Saturday’s first half of the race, said McMillin. It was exciting to feel the power and enjoy how well our Ford F-15 handled over this short, but very challenging race course. We have a great field of SCORE Trophy-Trucks to start the 2010 SCORE Desert Series and I can’t wait for the green flag to drop Saturday.”

Qualifying second was Mexico’s Gus Vildosola Jr., last year’s leader through the first half of the race, with a time of 7:09.71 in the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 he shares with his father Gus Sr.

The four trucks that elected not to qualify on Friday, will start Saturday’s portion of the race behind the other 24 SCORE Trophy-Trucks.

SCORE Laughlin Final Advance

January 10, 2010

This Weekend in Laughlin, Nev.
Former champs Gordon & B.J. Baldwin returning from desert rally
To join over 130 entries at 16th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge

Pre-race festivities Friday include SCORE Trophy-Truck Qualifying and $16,000 SCORE Laughlin Leap

Field has six McMillin Racing entries, four from Wilson Motorsports; MacCachren, Weyhrichs, Jefferies in two classes,
Defending season SCORE Class champs Duran Bros, Parkhouse, Steele, Chamlee, Carr, Stacy, Lawrence, Matney, Lang

LAUGHLIN, Nev.—Adding some major drama and extra excitement to the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck racing division for this week’s 16th Annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge was the announcement today that SCORE desert racing stars Robby Gordon and B.J. Baldwin will return from the international desert rally they are competing at in Argentina and Chile in time for Sunday’s final day of the two-day race in Laughlin, Nev..
For the 16th straight year, motorsports fans and racers from 11 U.S. States, Mexico, Denmark and Germany will gather in Laughlin, the Southern Nevada desert resort town along the shores of the Colorado River, for the popular SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. The first major motorsports event of the year in the United States will be held Thursday through Sunday, launching the five-race 2010 SCORE Desert Series, the World's Foremost Desert Racing Series.
Gordon, Charlotte, N.C., last year’s overall winner in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and the reigning SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall point champion, and Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin, who won this race both in 2006 and 2007, are finishing the Dakar Rally, will fly to Miami where a chartered plane will hopefully get them to the Bullhead City (Ariz.) airport for Sunday’s final half of the two-day race. The featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks has 26 entries. After the rally ends on Saturday, the pair will begin the arduous 15-plus hour journey from Argentina to Laughlin.
Robby Gordon, a NASCAR Cup Series owner/driver, has entered his father Bob Gordon in the No. 1 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500 and the elder Gordon will race on Saturday while another second-generation desert racer, Chad Ragland of Phoenix, will race on Saturday in B.J. Baldwin’s No. 97 Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado.
“You certainly wouldn’t be wrong if you said B.J. and I are passionate about SCORE desert racing,” quipped Gordon, who has found time in his diverse racing career to win four SCORE season class point titles. “Saturday should be a great first half of the race, but I can assure you that we’re aren’t going through all this to get to Laughlin for just another Sunday drive. With this weekend being a holiday weekend, nobody should leave Laughlin early. It’s a new year and a new decade and I’ve got lots more to prove.”
One of the event's most popular features, the SCORE Laughlin Leap, revs up the fun and helps get the weekend off. Moved to a new day, the SCORE Laughlin Leap will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday. The SCORE Laughlin Leap will start with a fireworks display. General admission grandstand tickets, priced at $20 each, will be available at the gate.
Drivers will enjoy the spotlight at the Laughlin Events Park, competing for a $16,000 purse and the honor of beating the 2009 champions. The SCORE Laughlin Leap, a dirt ramp built into the middle of the stadium portion of the race course, challenges the most daring of drivers. This year's competitors will be attempting to break the event record in the SCORE Laughlin Leap of 161' 6" set this past January by Larry Roeseler in the Norman Motorsports Ford F-150.
For the third straight year, qualifying for starting positions for the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division will be held on Friday. With free admission to the grandstand seating area, SCORE Trophy-Truck qualifying will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and each truck will be timed over one solo lap of the 6.25-mile course to determine the start order in that class for Saturday’s first half of the race.
Friday's pre-race activities will also include the SCORE Manufacturer's Midway and vendors village from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. SCORE Contingency, which includes each vehicle being pushed down the lanes in front of the Colorado Belle and Edgewater Hotels, alongside Casino Drive.
With 19 classes divided into five groups, the single race is divided into multi-lap segments split over two days. Starting at 7 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division will run 8 laps over the 6.25-mile course at 1 p.m. each day followed by the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars that will run their 8 laps at 3 p.m. each day. The combined elapsed time and number of laps completed from both days will determine the final finishing position for each vehicle. Two vehicles will leave the start line every 15 seconds.
Daily general admission tickets, good for grandstand seating, are $20 each per day for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, children 10 and under are free. Daily VIP tickets are $40 each per day for the each day, good for admission to the Laughlin Hospitality Chalet, including food, beverage and special seating.
Returning to the stadium seating area once again will be the immensely popular SCOREvision Large-screen LCD display, showing live footage from virtually the entire race course.
Tickets, priced at $5 each per person, will also be available each race day for 'SCORE Hill', which overlooks the infield, start/finish area and the main pits. The SCORE Hill will have grandstands and standing room areas along with vendors, concessions and the other public safety services available. Grandstand GA tickets also have access to SCORE Hill during the two race days.
The Laughlin Tourism Commission is also selling three-day general admission passes for $50 and three-day VIP passes for $100. With the purchase of a general admission or VIP ticket, spectators can also buy pit passes for an additional $10 per day.
The newest spectator area, opened in 2008 adjacent to Laughlin High School off of Cougar Drive, allows entry at $10 per vehicle, as space allows, to the backside of the course with a view of much of the 6.25-mile loop. Tickets for the Laughlin High spectator area will be available only on each day of racing at the entrance off of Cougar Drive.
The Laughlin Events Park, with grandstand seating, vendor's village and food court is just minutes from the destinations eight resorts and includes an infield with switchbacks, whoops, minijumps and the SCORE Laughlin Leap.
McMillin and Wilson, two of the biggest family names in the world of desert racing, have both made big plans for the new decade, starting with commitments to run high-profile, multi-vehicle teams in the 2010 SCORE Desert Series, the world’s foremost desert racing series.
Both with second and third generation drivers, McMillin Racing of San Diego and Wilson Motorsports of Long Beach, Calif., the McMillins have six entries and the Wilson’s four in the2010 SCORE season-opener. Combined, the two prominent desert racing families have two vehicles in SCORE Trophy-Truck, three in the unlimited Class 1, four in Class 1-2/1600 and one vehicle in SCORE Lite.
Besides Gordon, B.J. Baldwin, Phoenix’s Nick Vanderwey, who will be first vehicle to qualify Friday, and Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren, who has six career class wins in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, among the other regulars who were also officially in SCORE Trophy-Truck (26 entries to date) are Andy McMilllin, Mark McMillin, Roger Norman, Cameron Steele, Gus Vildosola, Ed Stout, Damen Jefferies, Bobby Baldwin, Robbie Pierce, Pete Sohren, Bill McBeath, Adam Householder and Gary and Mark Weyhrich.
Over 130 expected entries will compete in 19 classes for cars and trucks for nearly $300,000 in prize money and contingency postings during the four-day SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.
Besides defending season point champion Randy Wilson, among the other SCORE regulars who have officially entered in Class 1 (24 entries) are: Ronny Wilson, Armin Schwarz, Brian Parkhouse, Danny and Dale Ebberts, Pat Dean/Danny Anderson, Harley Letner and Daniel McMillin. Dale Ebberts has three class wins in Laughlin, including the overall wins in 2003 and 2005.
MacCachren, whose Laughlin wins include SCORE Trophy-Truck in 1996 and both Class 1-2/1600 and SCORE Lite in 2004, will start eighth in Class 1-2/1600 (20 entries) as well as race in the No. 21 SCORE Trophy-Truck.
Among the others entered in two classes are Damen Jefferies (SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1), the Weyhrich brothers Gary and Mark (SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1), Cameron Steele (SCORE Trophy-Truck and Sportsman Truck), Rob Bruce (SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1), Daniel McMillin (Class 1 and Class 1-2/1600) and Justin Smith (Class 1-2/1600 and SCORE Lite).
With late entries accepted until race morning, the 2009 SCORE season class point champions entered are Randy Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1), Duran brothers Hiram and Eric, Tecate, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600), Kevin Carr, San Diego (Class 5), Heidi Steele, San Clemente, Calif. (Class 6), Dan Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif. (Class 7), Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Va. Team ATK Wins Back to Back Baja 1000 Victories

Team ATK Skilton/Krellwitz Jeep Wrangler Score Back to Back Baja 1000 Victories

The ATK powered Jeep proved its toughness once again at this year’s 42nd running of the SCORE Baja 1000 when it crossed the finish line in Ensenada, Mexico after 24 hours and 11 minutes of brutal Baja racing, besting all class competitors for a second straight Baja 1000 class 3 victory. The race marked 9 wins in 10 races for the ATK Jeep, including two Baja 1000's and a Baja 500.

Darren Skilton, along with co-driver Skyler Gambrell, piloted the race Jeep for the first 400 miles of the event; charging from the rear start position in Class 3 (short wheel base 4wd) to the front of the pack in the first 15 miles of the course. They went on to tackle the treacherous Sierra de Juarez summit and the rough and rocky San Felipe loop through the Matomi Wash. They handed the car off to Jon Krellwitz and Patrick Smith at the BFG pit just north of San Felipe in Borrego at 11 o'clock pm with a 50 mile lead on the nearest class competitor. Averaging 38 miles per/hour and passing nearly 100 cars in the first 400 miles of the race, Skilton stepped out of the vehicle to comment that, "This ATK Jeep is one tough vehicle, I drove it hard all day and it took the beating with ease."
Krellwitz and Smith had an issue with the transfer case around mile 460 and had to limp the car out to pit at mile 490. Additional time was lost at mile 472 when the Jeep was held up for 2 1/2 hours behind one of Baja's infamous bottle necks as another competitor was unable to negotiate a river crossing. The transfer case was swapped out and Gambrell got back in the passenger seat for the ride up the pacific coast, across the rocky silt hills of Urapan, and on to the finish and the victory. Krellwitz said at the finish, "It was a long but good day for the ATK Jeep, the 4.7 ATK stroker engine pulled hard from start to finish and our BFG tires hooked up good with no flat tires. It was a bummer to have an issue with the t case up in the Mikes loop and get stuck in the bottle neck, but the course was very challenging and made for a great adventure, plus its always good to have a class win in Baja."

SCORE Baja 1000 Results Story

328 Official Starters

Norman/Weigand/Cody claim Overall motorcycle/Class 22 crown;

McMillins earn Overall 4-wheel win at 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000

Penhall/Martin win Class 1, Matlock/Goodman Jr./Miller/Caster repeat as Overall ATV champs;

R. Gordon finishes second in SCORE Trophy-Truck to capture class and SCORE Overall point title

In front of over 250,000 fanatical fans in Baja California, Mexico

ENSENADA, Mexico—Etching their names on the granite history of the world’s most legendary desert race, Kendall Norman/Tim Weigand/Quinn Cody along with the team of Andy McMillin and his father Scott became part of motorsports history by capturing the overall 2-wheel and 4-wheel victories late Friday and early Saturday in the 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races.

Defeating a deep and talented field of 328 sturdy starters that came from 39 U.S. States and 14 countries, the Norman/Weigan/Cody trio won Class 22 on the Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X motorcycle while the McMillins powered their way to the top of the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division in the No. 31 McMillin Racing Chevy Silverado.

After complete review of the data tracking devices used by each vehicle in the race and with time penalties assessed accordingly for course deviations and/or speeding on the brief pavement sections used as part of the race course, the results were declared official by SCORE International officials at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The world’s best known and most prestigious desert race, held on a difficult 672.85-mile course of natural desert terrain, started for the 35th time and finished for the 20th time in Ensenada, Mexico, 65 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.

With massive crowds reaching over 250,000 spread out along the rugged course that traveled from Ensenada to Ojos Negros, east down Laguna Salada to San Felipe, down through the legendary Matomi Wash, around Mike’s Sky Ranch, through both Rancho Las Truchas and Rancho El Coyote, down the infamous Simpson’s Hill and back to the Pacific Coast below San Vicente and up through Santo Tomas, Uruapan and back to Ojos Negros, covering much of the northern half of the majestic Baja California peninsula to and from Ensenada.

As the final checkered flag dropped Saturday night for the last of 185 official finishers in the 42nd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter had been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the magnificent Baja California peninsula.

The 328 starters are the second most ever in race history for a ‘Loop’ race and the seventh most of any race in the 42-year history of the event. The 185 finishers are also the sixth-most in event history. The finishing percentage this year was a very solid 56.4 percent considering the extreme dusty conditions and the unique ruggedness of the course.

With Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif., starting the race and racing to mile 200 as well as the final 169 miles to the finish line, Cody, Los Olivos, Calif., rode from rm200 to rm350 and Weigand rode the Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X from rm350 to rm504 to give Honda increase its record overall victory total in this race to 20 wins. In also giving Honda a record 14th consecutive overall win in this epic race, the JCR team finessed its way around the challenging course in 13 hours, 27 minutes and 50 seconds, averaging 49.97 miles per hour in the elapsed-time race.

Part of the prominent third-generation racing family, Andy McMillin and his father Scott McMillin, National City, Calif., powered their Chevy Silverado to a 4-wheel-vehicle winning time of 14:19:50, averaging 45.29mph.

For Norman, it was his third straight overall motorcycle win and fourth total in this race, the second for Cody and first for Weigand.

Andy McMillin also won the overall 4-wheel vehicle title in this race in 2006 as the second driver for NASCAR’s Robby Gordon while Scott McMillin earned his third class win in race history and first overall crown.

Driving two segments of the race, Andy McMillin started the race and drove the first 206 miles of the race. Scott McMillin drove the middle section from rm206 to rm500 where he handed back the driving to his son to drive the final 173 miles to the finish line in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

Winning the overall ATV and Class 25 victory for the second straight year was the team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif. Matlock’s teammates this year were returning riders Harold Goodman, Brownstown, Mich., and Wes Miller, Fallbrook, Calif., along with Josh Caster, also of El Cajon. The team covered the course in a championship time of 16:54:52, averaging 39.78mph on the No. 1a Honda TRX700XX. The talented team won two of the three SCORE Baja races this season to earn their second straight season point title in their class.

There we no penalties assessed to any of the three overall winners in the race.

“I started the race and I think we started 17th on the road,” said Andy McMillin, who now has two career SCORE Trophy-Truck wins. “The plan was just to kind of take it easy and kind of let the race come to us. Sal (Fish) laid out a really rough, tough course this year. We knew that it was going to take one trip that didn’t have any problems to get the win. That was our plan all day – stay smooth and not have any downtime, no flat tires. I gave my dad the truck at mile 206 and I think we were seventh on the road and pretty close on the overall lead.”

“My dad drove the San Felipe loop and the Mike’s loop. By the time he got to San Felipe, he was the first truck on the road. My dad handed me a great lead (just over 30 minutes), so it was pretty easy from that point. It was kind of just stay on the race course and you won’t get in trouble, so that was our plan and we followed it and let the race come to us, really.”

Expanding further on their race, Scott McMillin commented on his first overall win in this race, “The Tecate SCORE Baja 1000--you just don’t come down here and decide to race this a month in advance; this takes a whole year of planning. We have a dedicated team back at our shop, about five core guys who work fulltime on this. Plus, there are another 20 volunteers who are with us at all the races, all the pre-running, all the planning. We just couldn’t have done it without all of them. They are as much a part of this win as those of us riding in the truck. Plus we have access to the five BFG Tires pits along the way.”

“It’s really great that they posted (the virtual checkpoints) in advance ... so when we were pre-running and practicing, we knew exactly where to be and what we were supposed to do. They are all the same lines we’ve all been racing all these years. Always – all the 30 years that I’ve been racing – the fastest way is the racecourse. I can’t tell you how many times I just take the racecourse and stay on it and stay focused and you go by all the guys that are trying to find the smooth route. Before this race, we decided that we’re going to race all the SCORE races next year.”

Turning 72 years old on Sunday, venerable veteran desert racer Rod Hall, Reno, Nev., lit the candles on his celebration during the final hours of the legendary race, adding to his race-record total of class wins with a pair of wins in a pair of Rod Hall Racing Hummer H3 vehicles in both the Stock Full and the Stock Mini class to give him 21 in his amazing career. Originally entered as a second driver in both classes in vehicles where his sons Chad and Josh Hall were the drivers of record, Rod ended up as the primary driver in Stock Mini when Josh was unable to attend the race because of a family emergency. With the help of his sons and friends, Hall also continued his streak as the only person in the history of the event to have raced all 42 years since it began in 1967.

Chad Hall earned his eighth career class win in this race and the Hall family continues to be the winningest family in the history of this race with 33 total class wins.

The battle for the overall motorcycle victory marked the SCORE Baja racing rekindling of one of its greatest rivalries as Kawasaki returned with a factory-supported team for the first time since 1995 to battle against the Honda factory-supported racers. In the end, Honda defeated Kawasaki by just one minute, 57 seconds, although the No. 1X Kawasaki KX450 team led by former two-time Honda race winner Robby Bell, Sun City, Calif., finished first physically in the demanding race but lost on corrected time.

“I rode from the start to Borrego, mile 200 and Robby (Bell) was up about ten minutes,” said Norman at the finish line. “I started way back and there was a ton of dust. I just couldn’t get through it. By the time I finally cleared the dust, he was gone. When I got the bike back from Timmy Weigand at the Meadows (Mile 504), I was only a minute and half down. Quinn Cody and Timmy did some great work out there. I figured it was going be close to impossible to pass Steve (Hengeveld) on the final run because of the dust and being at night. But I know if I was in his dust that is all I needed to do (to win). It feels great to win the SCORE Baja 1000 three years in a row and fourth total. I am really stoked.”

“It was definitely a good battle at night. There was a lot of dust out here. Steve is a great night racer and was going. I’d get in his dust and slow down, get in his dust and slow down. He rode a great race and it was war out there today. We had all of our guys positioned and they put in a lot of hard work. I couldn’t be happier right now.”

A field of 27 SCORE Trophy-Trucks, the high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks, dominated the overall 4-wheel results, claiming seven of the top 10 finishing spots, including the first six.

Finishing second was last year’s overall winning 4-wheel team of Roger Norman, Reno, Nev./Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., who finished 32 minutes, 37 seconds behind the McMillins in a time of 14:52:27 in the No. 8 Norman Motorsports Ford F-150.

Third overall was this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 winner Rick D. Johnson, Barstow, Calif with a time of 15:02:36 in the No. 71 Ford F-150 while driving the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 of Mexico’s Gustavo Vildsola Jr., and his father Gus Vildosola.

NASCAR Cup Team owner/driver Robby Gordon, Charlotte, N.C., who left immediately after securing the 2009 SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall point championship in the No. 77 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500, drove consistently to finish fifth in a penalty-free time of15:14:31 while the team of Robby Pierce/Mike Julston, Santee, Calif., finished sixth overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck, finishing in 15:29:42 in the No. 30 MasterCraft Chevy Silverado.

The top three finishers in the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars finished seventh through nine respectively among 4-wheel finishers.

First in Class 1 was the veteran team of Jerry Penhall, Costa Mesa, Calif./Dan Martin, Monrovia, Calif., with a time of 15:38:19 in a Chevy-powered Penhall while second was the team of Germany’s Armin Schwarz/Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. (Denmark) in 15:52:02 in the All-German Motorsports Jimco-BMW.

Finishing ninth overall and third in Class 1 was the team of Randy Wilson, Lakewood, Calif., his brother Ronny Wilson of Long Beach, Calif., and Jeff Quinn, Irvine, Calif., who also clinched a close Class 1 point champion race with the Schwarz/Christensen team in the Wilson Motorsports Jimco-Chevy. The finished the course in 16:14:05.

Completing the top 10 overall 4-wheel finishers list was eight-time SCORE Baja 1000 class winner Mark McMillin, El Cajon, Calif./Brian Ewalt, Bonita, Calif., with a time of 16:15:25 in the No. 23 McMillin Racing Ford F-150. Mark is the brother of Scott McMillin and unlce of overall winner Andy McMillin.

In the manufacturer’s battle of ‘beat the Baja’ research and development, a Chevy-powered vehicle won for the 11th time and BFGoodrich Tires won for the 23rd time in the last 24 years.

Eric Duran, Tecate, Calif., is driver of record for his family team and close win by just 23 seconds in Class 1-2/1600 in a Neth-VW, they secured the season point championship in the class. Entering the race in a close third place, the Duran brothers defeated the Wilson Motorsports team of Brian Wilson, Long Beach, Calif./Sammy Ehrenberg, Las Vegas/LJ Kennedy, Orange, Calif./Brad Wilson, Long Beach, Calif., in the race, moving them past the Wilson team to earn the season point title. There were 17 starters in the class and Justin Smith, Capistrano Beach, Calif., who was tied with the Wilsons in the season class points, was leading early, had mechanical problems and struggled to a sixth place finish in class.

SCORE points are based on starting and finishing as well as the number of starters in each class and placement position in every race. All class titles will go down to the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

In one of the class races, Darren Skilton, Long beach, Calif., won Class 3 in a Jeep Wrangler for his sixth class win in this race. For the second straight year, he defeated rivals Donald and Kenneth Moss of Sacramento, who finished second in class, 37 minutes, 14 seconds behind Skilton.

In Class 40 for motorcycle riders over 40 years old, the team led by Scott Myers, Menifee, Calif. were victorious on a Honda CRF450X and team rider Craig Adams, San Clemente, Calif. earned his 14th and 15th class wins in this race. Adams also was a rider on the Class 50-winning team on another Honda CRF450X. Jim O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif., was the rider of record on the Class 50 team where he earned his ninth career class win in this race.

Richard Jackson, Acton, Calif., led his team to his seventh class win in this race, this year in Class 60, riders over 60, on a Honda CRF450X.

In Class 5/1600, Mexico’s Marcos Nunez/Norberto Rivera, drover their VW Baja Bug to victory. Nunez now has six class wins in this race.

Another father/son team Pancho and Cisco Bio, won Class 9 giving Pancho his fourth class win in SCORE Baja 1000 history.

Running against a formidable field of 14 starters in SCORE Lite, with vehicles all having VW engines, Brent Parkhouse and his son Cody, Long Beach, Calif., were winners in a Molton race car while Mike Lawrence, Banning, Calif., captured Class 10 in his Lothringer-VW for the fourth time in five races this season. It was Parkhouse’s second class win of the season.

In Class 5 for unlimited VW Baja Bugs, Kevin Carr, San Diego, won his class for the fourth time this season and in Class 7, Dan Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif., driving a Ford Ranger, also won for the fourth time this season.
