INJURY forced David Coulthard to pull out of a crucial Formula One testing session in Barcelona yesterday.

The Scot hurt his neck during the first day of the final pre-season testing programme at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The Red Bull Racing driver had treatment last night and it is hoped he will be back behind the wheel today.

With Red Bull running two cars this week, sister team Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel stood in for Coulthard yesterday afternoon.

The latter only have one of their new cars on track.

Dario Franchitti climbed the NASCAR Nationwide Standings to 19th after finishing 24th in the twice-postponed Stater 300 race.

BASKETBALL: Maurice Hampton is desperate for Scottish Rocks team-mate Gareth Murray to return from a sprained ankle before the Braehead outfit lose any more ground in the race to make the BBL play-offs.

Murray missed last Sunday's defeat to Guildford and is a doubt for Saturday's trip to Worcester. Hampton said: "Gareth is a key player for us and the sooner he comes back, the better."

CRICKET: Corstorphine kid Paddy Saddler last night pledged his future to Scotland after being picked for a place on a prestigious trip to India next month.

The 16-year-old was born in London but moved to Edinburgh 10 years ago. He is the only Scots-based player selected to play for an MCC Schools side at the first Spirit of Cricket Festival in Chandigarh next month.

Saddler was nominated by national youth boss Craig Wright who wants him in the Scotland Under-17 team that will compete in the County Championship for the first time next season.

Saddler will face schools sides from India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

CYCLING: Chris Hoy will be up against old rival Arnaud Tournant when he defends his Keirin title at next month's World Championships in Manchester. The Edinburgh rider is bidding to extend a 24-race winning streak.

TENNIS: Top seed Jamie Baker faces Italian Marco Crugnola in the first round of the Harlingen Futures event in Texas today.

SQUASH: Scotland's John White reached the second round of the Virginia Pro Championship in Richmond when he beat Australian qualifier Wade Johnstone 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7.

TABLE TENNIS: Scotland lost 3-2 to Algeria in their last-but-one group match at the World Team Championships in China.
